basique v. (Grooming Dept) ★★★☆☆ vetiver & wood
This tub of basique is one of GD's earliest vegetable soaps (I got it in June 2017, not too long after the company first hung out its sign). It used to be one of my favorites. Easy to load, it makes a light vegan lather that nevertheless cushions like it's made of tallow. It's as slick as spit, and the finish is remarkably soft, too. Lately, though, I've noticed that the soap is starting to separate. There are some hard, waxy bits precipitating out of the buttery background. It's probably just stearic acid (I've seen something similar with Wickham's soaps. Nothing to panic about, but a little annoying). So, this tub of basique still gives a good shave, but it takes a lot of stirring to get the waxy bumps to melt into the lather. Having heard nothing but praise for all of GD's bases, I'm sure what I'm seeing is just a fluke.
basique smells like Comme des Garçons Wonderwood fragrance. Maybe even better.
