What soap/cream did you use today?

Old Spice shaving soap (vintage)

It's cold in Idaho this morning so I thought to make it colder with Stirlings Glacial Lemon Chill and this one is sub zero. No "kiss of menthol" or "touch of chill" here, just in-your-face frostiness. As stated, the scent is lemon. Slick and protective and easy to lather.

Love this one!

Today was the lowly Polmolive Shaving Stick. It never ceases to amaze me how well this soap works. Cushion and glide are right there with the top tier guys and the scent is manly.

Le Grand Chypre t. (Barrister & Mann) ★★★★★ bergamot, lime, labdanum, oakmoss, peach, rose, frankincense, cedar, cinnamon

This may be the most complicated fragrance you'll ever find in a shaving soap. It takes yesterday's "little chypre" accord of citrus, labdanum, and oakmoss, and rockets it up into the celestial realms of fine perfume. It's rich, enlivening, and satisfying.

François Coty first combined citrus, labdanum, and oakmoss in his Chypre parfum of 1917. He used bergamot to lighten the wild, prickly edges of the resins and to give the fragrance some sweetness. Two years later, Jacques Guerlain came out with own version of chypre, the remarkable  Mitsouko. He had the brilliant idea of accenting the acrid resins with a squeeze of soft peach. Compared to Coty's Chypre, Mitsouko was smoother, suave enough to appeal to a refined woman but still preserving an undomesticated whiff that a man might find attractive. Nearly a century later B&M produced their Grand Chypre. It stays true to the tradition of the great chypres of the past, keeping both Coty's bergamot and Guerlain's peach notes, but it also adds a healthy dose of sparkling fresh lime that makes this night-on-the-town fragrance feel right at home on the edge of a porcelain sink at the crack of dawn.

I sure do like Haslinger and Coconut is as good as any. This is the older tallow version. Lathers easy and produces a great slick lather. Like all Haslinger soaps I've tried, scent level is low. If you are a coconut lover you won't find a snootful of coconut in this one. The coconut I get smells pretty artificial so no mental trip to the islands here. What I do get, however, is a really great shave. Always do with Haslinger.

Piacenza t. (Stirling Soap Co.) Acqua di Parma colonia

This soap's scent is not too far from Acqua di Parma colonia, but it's clearly not the real thing. That's the danger of making a clone of a popular scent. You've got to be spot on. Miss you mark even by a little and folks are bound to be disappointed. Truth be told, it would take a lot of good fragrance to hide the tallowy scent lurking in some of Stirling's soaps. They don't smell like a barnyard or abattoir, they just smell fatty. Their powerfully mentholated scents hide this note well, but some of the milder fragrances smell muted and clogged.

Abricot v. (Le Père Lucien) ★★☆☆☆ green apricot

We get older and our skin changes. What once were safe scents can suddenly, and annoyingly, start to irritate. For years I had no problem with soaps that smelled of orchard fruit, but lately pears, apples, and now apricots put a stinging blush on my face. That combined with LPL's light lather and lighter cushion made for an uncomfortable shave this morning. What's odd is that sometimes I get a great shearing from this soap. But today I may as well have used sandpaper. When I was done there was no bristle left, but my face felt tender and threadbare. At least the Shea butter patched some of the holes.

This isn't a sweet apricot scent. In fact, it's a little green with some metal in it. I suspect that last note comes from the excellent stainless container.
