Stella Alpina (Saponificio Varesino) citrus, eucalyptus, tropical wood
Stella Alpina, ‘alpine star’, is the Italian name for the flower known in German as edelwiess. This star-shaped member of the sunflower family is a popular emblem of the Alps. Oil extracted from the plant is included among this soap’s ingredients. It is credited with preventing the loss of collagen and keeping the skin supple. If this flower has a scent, I haven’t noticed it. Most alpine flowers don’t smell of much at all, or what little fragrance they have is often blown away by stiff alpine breezes. However, when I smell this soap, what I notice first isn’t flowers, but the tart sappy fragrance of eucalyptus. Saponificio Varesino combines this pungent scent with some heady citrus and warm tropical woods to make a tangy cologne. Several varieties of eucalyptus, citrus, and sandalwood grow in our neighboring woods, making this soap smell to me more like a walk through a rainforest than a hike through a high mountain meadow.
