Juniper (Cold River Soap Works) juniper & vetiver
When Cold River hit the re-set button at the beginning of this year, they put aside modern perfumery’s froufrou and pointed their noses back to the ancient scents – cedar, cypress, juniper – the fragrant woods that an old Babylonian king would have set on the incense burners in his ziggurat. Smoke rising from the incense was, for him, the means to convey his prayers to heaven. As Cold River shows us, these resinous woods still smell divine.
It’s no surprise that this soap opens with some genuine pungent juniper, sharp enough to put a zing on your tongue when you sniff it. But then, a little unexpectedly, the scent settles down into a smooth vetiver. This vetiver is quite unlike any I’ve smelled before. It’s creamy, earthy, and peppery, not very bright, but not dirty either. It’s also penetrating without becoming obnoxious. It’s a vetiver that’s finer than those I smell in many grands parfums. I’m ready to put a wick in this soap and burn it like a candle so that the scent fills the whole house with its sublime aroma.
