________

I shave every other day. My shaves are almost exclusively in the evening, before bed. Today, on a somewhat laxidasical morning, I was taking stock of my shave gear. I had just recently gotten a tub of Long Rifle Soap, Hunting Lodge.

It's supposed to be leather, Bay Rum, and tobacco. I'm not certain what scents I pick up from this soap.  I can definitely catch a hint of bay in the background, but the leather and tobacco blend into something odd and different. All in all, The scent is nice albeit very very (very very very) light.

I have used the soap once before. As I said the scent is very light, which is a little unappealing. However, the performance is way up there... Very slick and hydrating.

Now, when the soap arrived it was a soft soap "puck" floating in a tin container. Looking at it, I decided my only option was to press it in. I don't like to do this, as I don't want a meddle with the pristine condition of a soap.

With it all secured into the dish, I thought " Since I've already mangled it, I  wonder if this would be a good soap to keep strictly for face lathering?

On a whim I pulled out my Omega S brush, which I haven't used in a while. After about 20 seconds of loading, I whipped up a nice dry lather on the brush and slowly added water and applied it to my face. Using my Rockwell 6s on r4 I proceeded to shave (normally I'm an r2 user, but I wanted to test the bounds of this soaps slickness).

Wow, is all I can say. What a joy. I was again greeted with a great shave from this little, nearly scentless, puck.

I don't know that I'll keep it for only face lathering, but it was a fun shave on a nice Saturday morning. Different and joyful.

I prefer the long version Happy2

I noticed an unopened container of I Coloniali soap in my cupboard this week. The pink puck in the terra cotta container. It had dried out a little but I used it with some Grooming Dept pre shave and it lathered normally, which is to say, very well. It’s as good as it ever was and I had as nice a shave as I’ve ever had. I love the smell of the I Coloniali as well as the performance.  Happy2

It is a great soap.  When I learned it was being discontinued I purchased several refills.  I do not believe you have to worry about it drying out because the terra cotta container is not air tight and in all the years I have had it, it always makes a great lather.

Miel v. (Lainess) honey, spices, coffee

Over the years Le Père Lucien has made soaps for a number of wet shaving groups (e.g., Yourshaving, Pogonotomie, Darwin, Rasoio & Pennello). Now LPL has started collaborating with the Asinerie de la Vioune, a donkey farm located not far from Cyril’s lab, to produce a range of donkey milk soaps. The label on today’s soap, Miel, says it’s made with 17% fresh organic donkey milk. That's a lot of milk, and it makes a rich, unctuous lather that hydrates deep and still washes away clean. As you might expect, Miel (French for ‘honey’) smells very sweet. I had to leave the lid off the jar a few days before using it. It was just too cloying at first. Now that it’s had time to breath, the honey smells more natural, and I also get notes of fresh bread, lightly toasted spices, and roasted coffee beans. So Miel smells like a French breakfast. To be honest, it’s not my favorite fragrance for a soap. Food smells rarely are. But the lather is truly splendid. Lainess also comes in Cherry, Chocolate Pear, and Blue Pearl (aquatic).
