Ambre Sultan (Serge Lutens, 1993) bay leaf, oregano, labdanum, vanilla

Sweet, creamy vanilla sprinkled with dried herbs – not exactly a predictable pairing, but that's what makes this unusual amber so successful. The dusty, bitter herbs keep the honeyed amber in check, lending it some backbone and substance and keeping it from dripping off your arm. Try Ambre Sultan after a shave with a fougère soap and watch how it all mixes together to form an interesting sweet chypre.
