- Oleo Soapworks
- Noble Otter
- Eufros
- Declaration Grooming (not Ikarus base)

That is it. I have several scents of each except DG. Each shaves a little differently and behaves differently post shave.

If I want a close but protective shave and a less buttered post shave, Eufros it is.

If I want a super slick shave with fantastic post shave feel, Oleo.

If I want a killer scent with excellent performance...Noble Otter.

DG is the ugly stepchild...shaves awesome, very buttery post shave. Scent is just not as good as my other soaps...

My current list...

VERY BEST
Cold River Soap Works Glide - Best performance and great scents.
Saponificio Varesino - Great performance and best scents.

NOT VERY BEST (But still awesome)
Mikes - Good performance and a few great scents. Excellent value.
Jabonman/Eufros - Great performance and good scents. Difficult to order.

A few others come close to my "NOT VERY BEST" but still awesome category. Held back by being a notch below in performance, scents or other factor.
Grooming Dept. - Very good performance and so-so scents. Limited availability is a bummer.
Wholly Kaw - Good performance and scents. Very expensive and shipping is way overpriced.

So many good soaps nowadays that once you get past the disappointment of the overhyped stuff things begin to normalize. You can find some real gems in my list above.

I was able to snag couple of soaps from Grooming Dept on last release but had to let them go as shipping was a bomb at 45$ to India. I am not sure where these artisans are taking shipping quotes from...

You might be fortunate that you had to let them go as the owner seems to be MIA and nothing has shipped from the last release.

Grooming Dept Coattails.

Yeah, the owner is an MIA of sorts - if you count being debilitatingly ill as "MIA" - but his soaps are well worth waiting for.  If I had to tack an additional $45 on to the price, I would pay it in a heartbeat.  Now why would I pay an additional $45?  Simple:  I want the VERY BEST, and IMO Grooming Dept soaps are the VERY BEST.  After all, that's what this thread is about.

EDIT:  I've been meaning to get back to this to acknowledge the post made by jags009 that I quoted below.  I understand what jags is saying, even though I see things differently.  Yes, I'd guess that $45 to ship soap is sticker shock for most of us.  And true, the "in a heartbeat" was an exaggeration.  However, when I consider all the unfinished tubs of  soap I have bought, paying an extra $45 for a soap that is the very best  is not outlandish at all to me.  Granted, I might not pay it in a heartbeat, but I would pay it.  The reason is that I'd rather have 1 jar of GD Lusso or Janus base soap than three jars of anything else.  It is a hypothetical question anyway, because the GD soaps are actually quite competitive with many artisan offerings.

A few other points:
  • $45 is not unheard of for shipping, depending on the services and speed requested, and certainly not unheard of for international shipping.  FYI a year or so ago, I tried to buy something from nassrasur.com.  When I couldn't find rates to the US or Canada, I did as the FAQs suggested and wrote requesting a quote.  I got an absurd reply - much higher than $45.  Shavemac currently charges $44.00 to ship a shaving brush with priority service from Germany to "World", which includes India.
  • By "very best" I of course mean "very best IMO, YMMV".
  • It is clear that competitors do not stand still, but as of now, nothing works as well for me as the Grooming Dept soaps.  So when I talk about the very best and what I would pay for it, I'm discussing a current purchase decision, not a marriage.  I can understand that the "$45 in a heartbeat" remark makes it sound more like a marriage; it is not.

I won't pay 45$ in a hearbeat or two to any single seller on shipping....that price is unheard of.
