Well that doesn't look right.

So I opened up a soap tub last night and found this. I have no doubt that it's from me closing it up too soon. Amazingly I’ve never had this happen to me before. My question is can I just scrape the top off and continue using it? Or do I learn my lesson and toss it?

Does it smell ok?

I couldn't smell anything not even the soap. It is a pretty lightly scented soap. I've been fighting sinuses the past few days and have been fairly stuffed up. So that might be a factor as well.

I would probably just wipe with a paper towel and try it.

I agree with Merchant. I could be wrong but it doesn't look like any kind of growth but rather bubbles of moisture from as you said not drying out the soap before putting it away. When was the last time you used the soap? Use a paper towel to wipe it and see what it looks like. If the soap is just fine and the issue is just on the surface, use it. And next time, dry out the soap before putting it away. It does a soap good.

I've seen something similar only on the surface of Chatillon Lux salves - some of the oils coming out of suspension. I jut smear it in and use as normal. Unless you notice the performance has deteriorated I wouldn't worry about. It does look interesting. Is it water or oil?

So I wiped off the soap last night, looks fine now and smells like it should. Looks like I just overreacted. Typically I leave my soap tubs out on the counter to dry for at least a day if not two. I think that's why finding that surprised me so much.

It was definitely oily. It looks like it was what Marko was talking about.

That’s an odd one ?

Glycerin type soaps tend to have this issue, its just excess moisture pulling the fragrance oils/glycerin to the surface. Have had several soaps do this over time even when properly dried. No reason to throw it away and nothing to worry about.

It’s from glycerin being pulled out of the soap.

It’s not abnormal, but the loss of glycerin will decrease the soap’s performance.
