I’m a face latherer. I know it’s ungentlemanly, but I do it anyway.
I also have extremely hard water.
To get a good lather, I need to use distilled water.  Yes, it’s a PITA.
Until I discovered this pottery “scuttle” brush soaker, it was all cold water lathering.
Now I can heat the top and bottom cups with HOT tap water!
Dump the tap water from the heated top cup, drop in my brush, add distilled water...
Soak the brush, shower and I can have a much appreciated warm lather!
The top cup is also tapered which allows me to use a lot less distilled water.
Fantastic!  Until I drop it in the sink!

Warm lather is indeed nice.

This is my standard setup:
(soaps, razors, etc change daily)

This is my thin-walled stainless bowl floating in the sink of hot water while I take a prep shower. One quarter-teaspoon of soap is already smeared areound inside of bowl. It works for face-lathering too.
When I get out of the shower I replace the water in the sink with fresh hot tap water.
The red silicon pad protects the sink from scratches.
The only drawback is that I can't use brushes with larger handles because the bowl would capsize and wash out all my lather. In that case I use a heavy earthenware or stoneware bowl and keep the water level shallower so that the bowl sits on the bottom.

Nice warm lather for all three passes.  Happy2

Nice setup. That looks like a Dirty Bird brush scuttle. I have one in the same colour.

It is!  First face lathering scuttle that I’ve found.  I like it a lot.  Until I drop it in the sink.

Very nice scuttle! I also love warm lather and after multiple failures with floating bowls I bought myself a Qshave scuttle at Amazon. It's very practical since all one piece: warm up before shower with brush left soaking, change of hot water and there you go.

The silicon pad is ingenious! I need to get one too and keep the razor warm as well :-)

This is a very timely thread for me.  I recently received, and just opened up, a package containing a beautiful scuttle made by Georgetown Pottery (Thanks Paul!).  I'm betting it is going to really contribute to the shaving experience...

That's partly what my red silicone pad is for, when I do use a glass or ceramic bowl/mug.

I am definitely going to get one of those!  Great idea.  Thanks.

I also have a huge bowl scuttle that I bot from PAA.
It’s too big and I don’t bowl lather, so I’d sell it cheap!
