I think all that sounds damn reasonable to me, considering that nobody is arguing that Varlet is not a top tier brush, and the artisan should be able to price his goods for whatever he wants without being bashed by a community that likes to consider itself to be full of gentlemen.

The reality is the market will be dictating whether his new pricing structure will be a hit or miss. We all have the freedom to make a choice of what we covet. No one is making us buy his brushes and if it does not prove to be successful he will need to adjust his business model much like Carbon Shaving had to. Remember we are the market and can play or not. It’s just a brush. A well crafted one but still a brush.

Varlet just sent an email out that “revisits” the new pricing structure. Market forces at work. Still in the 500 range depending on order options......

I'll consider once we got closer to the $450 price point for an 29mm XD. Highest I would go for a brush lol.

Those Varlet prices are still just too high.  Frankly, it has turned me off to the brand so I no longer want one.  The ZT1 and ZT2's from Mozingo are fabulous and cost +/- $220 for a custom handle and hand tied knot.  Black Eagles, of which I have two, are beautiful handles with hand tied knots and are around $300 with postage from South Africa.  I just don't know why an artisan brush should cost more than around $300??

If Varlet went back to their old prices for models and dropped "custom'" prices, I would not mind being on a waitlist for 3-12 months wait.  I just received my shipping notice from Wolfman today.  I was on the waitlist since early September.  Wolfman kept their prices the same when they transitioned to a waitlist rather than sporadic drops.  I would hope Varlet would do the same.

Wolfman just changed prices before going to the wait list. The "basic polish" was actually a price decrease. I signed up on the 4th day and hoping for a June 2020 razor. Excited for my WR2 OC and Darwin handle.

The Varlet price decrease was a good step and obviously based on forum comments. Unless Varlet has a 6 month order book, long term the prices may still be $25 too high. Short term, there will be smiles on those that have ordered and quick turnaround.

FYI - I view Aldo as a "class act" and my goal is still to own a Cauldron in Carbon Black.

Very true, but don't forget just as you have the option as to what to buy, I also have the ability to choose what I do with my time. At this point I'm making brushes and offering them for sale. If this doesn't work out for some reason it does not mean I'm going to sell them at a lower price, it means I will just make them for myself, and go join the workforce where I can enjoy similar pay and good benefits. We're very far away from that but... please be respectful of those that have invested the time and energy to design and produce what you want, because the equation has to make sense on our side too, or the products don't get made. There's a reason your dream products are what they are, it's because the people who design and make them work very hard to make them a reality.

I've made a gesture to my followers to soften the abrupt nature of the restructure, that is all. The prices for The Varlet will not go any lower than they are now, unfortunately. If you would like to consider owning one now or in the future, I'd be glad to go to work on your behalf if you are respectful of my time, which in a nutshell are the "real" market forces and I mean that in the best way possible.

Does anybody remember the old days when you walked into a store and looked at an item you were interested in?  You'd look at the price and maybe you'd say wow good deal and buy it right away or maybe you'd say wow, that's pricey and not worth it and walk out or maybe you'd say wow, that's pricey but I sure want that thing because its well made etc, I'm going to have to save some extra money out of my next few paycheques so I can afford this baby.  Or maybe you remember looking at the price tag and then going off on a rant to the salesperson or the shop owner giving them a lesson in business taken from your long history of no track record in business?  Yeah, I don't remember doing that either  Big Grin  I don't think anybody has to justify their price structure - the market will tell them if they're in line or out of line.  Thats enough.  This modern, social media driven, online commerce has its pluses but there are some minuses too.
