Underrated Soaps? Please recommend some.

You know, Primo, I don't happen to care for MWF but I do own it.  It may not be listed because so many of us, no matter which side of the fence we're on about the soap, have it in our dens and have tried it.

It's a staple, like Tabac or Old Spice. Hardly under discussed and probably not underrated.

I do think Haslinger is not under discussed these days but I would call it underrated because of its 60g size. Bruce, I and others love the pucks dimensions. As is, cut into shaving dishes and shaving sticks and on. People sometimes correlate the small puck with 'small' performance. Perfect soaps.

Haslinger is good but I think the price is a killer. Average Joe is going to click on Amazon, see its $13 shipped, Buy it, then figure out its $6.00+ an oz and scream. That's more than popular artisans, twice the price of Mystic, more than Klar, and a few dollars away from premier stuff like C&S. I know you can get it cheaper overseas but most people wont do that. This pricing strategy, while seemingly clever, probably hurts them.

In terms of discussion, one thread "over there". one post for 7 years, a few posts then nothing for 2 years, then 1800 posts in a  year or so from sudden converts who repeatedly post in the same thread. In a way, that sure sounds like flavor of the day.

The question becomes whether or not it will eventually become a staple like Tabac, or be a fad that disappears. I am afraid the cost, in the end, will decide. And the weak scent probably does help, but scent is a personal thing.

I'd call it under discussed but not under rated. It has its advocates that like it.

I sure wish I had tried it when I made post #2 bumping the 7y old thread back in 2012.

That thread is made up of a handful of us members praising the soap and discussing it, rather than starting a new thread every time someone discovers it or tried a new scent. The majority of the forum probably doesn't use it and dismisses it due to the small size, weak scent strength and cost stateside. As you said, it ain't cheap if you buy from N/A, but I get mine for about $4.50 a puck, landed in Canada. People who are done jumping on artisan bandwagons seem to be the ones discovering it and sticking with it as they have already sampled many artisan soaps.

It is flavor of the day for some, no doubt. Myself and a few others have been using it daily for the past 7-8 months and consider it the benchmark as to which other soaps are measured. I wouldn't consider it " my" flavor of the day, not by a long shot. I'm guessing I have used 12 pucks from start to finish over the past couple years.

That's how I see it but I've been known to be wrong once, maybe twice.

Haslinger can be had for under $5 a puck (35-65 shaves depending on user) from, yes, Europe. Cheaper than others I love, Mike's, CRSW (no longer use this soap), Mystic.

Guys I know order all the time from Europe. Connaught, Gifts & Care, Shavemac, and TVB. Takes anywhere from 3-10 days longer than North American vendors and half the price sometimes. Vendors in the US and Canada are too expensive. It's ridiculous actually guys don't get it.

It's a fellowship. Haslinger has been in Vienna since post WW2. Andreas Haslinger says the company is doing great and is going to pass on to his kids. Sounds good to me.

Not sure what you are disagree with but I will clarify. Average Joe Consumer in the US is simply not going to order overseas. They click Amazon and expect it in two days. We live in a world of instant gratification. Amazon is $13 shipped.  Most will not even do speciality stores. But, West Coast sells for $9 and Maggards for $8.50 plus shipping. At best this is $16 - $18 soap for a normal 4 oz.  If you get free shipping buy $79 of stuff, at best, its average price. At worse, its far over average. Even at your price, thats not more than Mystic. Thats the same price as Mystic. At 50 shaves (avg of ur number), at $8 thats 16 cents/shave. Not outrageous, not cheap. Maybe average? I'm still working on cost/shave.

I grant if you are a fan, you will seek the lowest price and put up with the shipping aggravation. Most people will not, not it todays society. "I want it and I want it now!",  not delayed gratification but instant gratification. In the US, pricing has to hurt them,

To put that into perspective, thats probably a lot larger than US Artisans but a lot smaller than say T&H https://companycheck.co.uk/company/00785...house-data although that doesnt show T&H annual sales. Regardless, in Austria it might very well be a staple.

Not so sure about that here. Ask the average "wet shaver" if they heard of Truefitt, TOBS, GFT, Tabac, etc and my guess is yes. Ask about Haslinger and you will get  a blank stare. That makes it a niche product - In north america.

My point here is under rated vs under discussed. I do not see Haslinger under rated. It has its advocates just as Tabac and so does Proraso. Its probably rated (on average throwing out the extremes on both ends of the curve) correctly. It is good. Its not poor and IMO not "the best" but I am talkouring average across many, many opinions. OTH, I do think its under discussed, obscure, few care about it other than its advocates, and simply gets little "press" across the entire virtual wet shaving community. Just my opinion.  Under discussed -  yes. Under rated - no.

I am not attacking your preferred soap. I am discussing its popularity, cost, and niche status in the US.

I don't know if you are just looking for soaps, but I think Nancy Boy makes an underrated cream. A few years back, I believe it was more frequently discussed on the forums.

Don't let the name fool you. It's a very understated and classy store. The products are very friendly to the skin, and the scents are refreshing.

Exactly! I only buy european soaps/products from Shaving.ie, Connaught Shaving, and Gits & Care. I'm not familiar with TVB but will check them out. What's it stand for?
