All I know is I paid post-Kickstarter price for the Oristo in black (Stealth), got it in two days, had my first shave with it, and it's a very mild and smooth shaver. No issues with the handle. I'm also on the list to be notified when Joe makes the Black Mamba available again.

I don't have a Black Mamba nor have I ever shaved with one, but from the reviews I've read of it, the pictures I've seen, and my experience with the Oristo Stealth,  I would speculate that they're pretty close in performance.

I have a Black Mamba and it's exactly as you describe the Oristo, a mild and smooth shaver. The razor head on the Oristo video is identical in every respect to the Black Mamba, it was like watching a video of my razor. The good news is that more people will get to experience this sweet shaving razor, be it a Black Mamba or an Oristo. It's actually a bit surprising how nicely it shaves as when you first load a blade into it there is an intimidating amount of blade exposure but it in no way translates to an overly aggressive shave.

Same here, Mark. The Oristo didn't have an appealing handle for me, but the head is really close if not identical to the BM. I use my BM from time to time, but I am tempted to get another from Joe if it had a few tweaks and at a good price.

Its interesting, we're all assuming that the Oristo "knockoff" is being done without IB/RR's consent but its entirely possible that its all being done in cooperation with IB and IB may even be part of the Kickstarter. Its like in retail where different brands occupy the shelves but are owned by the same company - you think you're making a brand choice but it all goes to the same place. If the Black Mamba's continue to be available in limited numbers then the demand for Oristo will remain strong - brilliant strategy to essentially double the price without risk of blowback from the market. Well, thats my conspiracy theory for the day - just stirring the potBig Grin

The Oristo is my first razor with this kind of black coating, are there any maintenance cautions you know from using either the Black Mamba or the Oristo Stealth ? Barbicide OK? Scrubbing Bubbles? Simple Green? All OK?

Thanks!
All the best,

Marko -- from what I can tell, you're 100% right. I think they are in cooperation.

I've just done normal maintenance on my Black Mamba and I'm assuming its the same coating - I've used only sunlight soap and a toothbrush. I'd stay away from any abrasives obviously. I've had it for 1 1/2 years and while it hasn't been a daily driver it has seen a fair amount of use and the coating shows no sign of coming off yet.

My Oristo Stealth (aka Black, well actually more of a dark gunmetal) has arrived. No complaints so far. The first shave will be tomorrow morning. Cheers everyone.

Michael, I’ve had a DLC razor head for five years and an Überglide handle for a few months. I’m not sure which coating the Oristo has (the Black Mamba is Überglide, I believe), but I haven’t had any issues with the coatings on those parts. The DLC has always been a little dull, whereas the Überglide is quite shiny.

I probably wouldn’t soak them in a heavy solution for more than 10 minutes, though. But the DLC just spent an entire day in a dish soap bath, and looks the same as before.

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”

Mamba will be back soon. I wanted to make it better, thinner plate, more precise and with 316L. It definitely won't be going up in price and may in fact be going down.

No bones with Oristo from us, we love and embrace free market capitalism.
