Any opinions on where to start with soaps..i have only used Pinaud and Williams

I like samples, myself. Maggard Razors hand-packs tiny tubs from several different makers. Wet Shaving Products, Phoenix Artisan Accoutrements, and Soap Commander sell their own samples. I'm sure there are others I don't know of or have forgotten.

Are my five most purchased soap makers. All offer a wide variety of scents. Stirling IMO is one of the best values out there, you get large tubs of soaps, top tier performance, and a huge selection of scents.

It would depend on your budget, scent preferences, lather quality characteristics, and soap availability. The list of contemporary soap makers is ever growing and the choice could be overwhelming.

I can highly recommend my three top soaps I've been using for over three years now & they are still my favorites! Because they are great performers, have great selection of very nice scents, and are still very affordable! IMO these soaps are very hard to beat.

I would try the Stirling soap samples. They are quite inexpensive and Stirling has the most variety of any vendor. Stirling quality and value is very good. I suggest buying 3 of their inexpensive containers and 3 to 6 samples. Those samples will last for many weeks, and give you an opportunity to try varieties of scents. I tried woodsy (pine, moss, etc.), "manly perfume", floral and citrus scents. I found that my favorites were mostly citrus, floral and several barbershop scents. I still have much of my first full size Stirling container, since I got SAD in the beginning. Remember, full size containers (5 to 6 oz) last a LONG time. This resulted in my collection which I estimate will last 3 to 5 years! For this reason, I have stopped purchasing soaps and creams. I also suggest trying some creams. IMHO, the best are Castle Forbes, Taylor of Bond Street and Art of Shaving. Those brands offer good performance (slickness, lathering & skin softener) and value. Value creams are Godrej and Palmolive in tubes. One container of cream will last for many weeks, so try not to over buy. In this hobby....SAD, RAD and BAD are often hard to overcome. Especially if you become a shaving addict, which unfortunately is easy to do. Have fun, and let us know how you are progressing.

Anything Bay Rum

If you got only one from each of the 5 listed and all the Bay Rums you’d be fine. I like Bay Rum.
