it seemed like it was only causing issues for some parts of the UK - when I ran some tests from a server in Ireland (I forget exactly where in Ireland now), the site speeds were fine, but as soon as I switched it to London, it ran into issues that people mentioned.
Basically what happened was the set up I use ended up firewalling the IP for one of the UK CDN endpoints from the provider we use.
