Mostly after showering but if not I just wash my face first with Musgo glycerin soap and don't notice any difference.

I shave at night and shower in the morning, so usually my prep is just a hot water scalp wash.

On rare occasions, when I have a day at work that requires me to be out in the field, and thus get very dirty(chimney sweeps and fireplace installations are dirty jobs), I shower at night and in those instances it is before my shave, but not as prep...

When I do have those rare occurrences of showering at night, I shower first only because I do not like the sensitivity my scalp has to hot water after a great shave. Even without any discernible irritation, my hot showers cause sensitivity of the scalp and I'm not a fan. So I shave after to avoid that feeling.

In the last year and change that I have been wet shaving, I have not noticed any major difference between shower and no shower as prep...

I don't notice much difference when it comes to my faces shaves. Single WTG pass. For my head shaves, I tend to get closer shaves and have fewer post-shave issues when I shower AFTER I shave. My theory is two-fold. I shower in warm water, which swells the skin. For me, that seems to lead to both more irritation, as well as to less-close shaves. The other factor is that showering after the shave seems to do a better job of rinsing away all of the leftover soap residue, which may contribute to my folliculitis issues.

I have always showered before shaving since switching to traditional wet shaving. (Because, that's the way I was told was the right way. Tongue)

I always shaved before showering when I used carts/disposables. Huh

do you wash your face or apply a hot/warm towel before shaving? I think we probably face similar problems with our skin and beard growth.
