I have heard a lot of good things about the Razorock Wunderbar and the Above the Tie S1 slant and was wondering which one my fellow shavers prefer.
To shave or not to shave, is that really a question?

I’ve had the S2 slant since 2016 or 17, very nice razor.

I owned 2 Wunderbars, hated them both. I don’t think I have ever gotten more cuts, nicks, weepers and irritation from any other razor that I’ve owned. I love RazoRock stealth slant, still have a couple, but the Wunderbar…….”Get ye back Satan!!!” sums up my feelings about that one.

Had the SE1 and Wunderbar and I'm the opposite as I much preferred the Wunderbar. Only sold as my Vintage Krect Spiral Curve Slant dethroned it.

I had the Wunderbar since it first came out (before the time they etched the bottom of the base plate. I also have the ATT S1 and S2. I totally enjoy shaving with all three, however they are all different. The Wunderbar is a very efficient and smooth shaver, but it does demand your respect. This is not a razor you pick up if you are already late for a meeting.

The S1 and S2 are also very efficient razors, but more controlled. the S1 is about a half step above the Merkur 37 in comfort and efficiency, and the S2 is slightly above that because of the open comb. They will produce a comfortable shave with little effort. One thing about the ATT razors is that they are discontinuing the classic line and so the only way you will get an S1 or S2 is through the secondary market, so you might be looking for other slant choices.

I too have the Wunderbar from the very first production, and I've said it before, and will say it again, the Wunderbar is the best slant I've ever shaved with, and I've got a hundred of them if I have one. The Merkur 37C used to hold the title but the Wunderbar shot it out of the saddle.

I own the ATT S1 & S2. A different animal. Not as radical a twist in the head as the Wunderbar. Both are smooth, comfortable and efficient shavers.

YMMV on all of the above.  Rolleyes

Yeah, the Wunderbar seems to be a very polarizing razor, people seem to either love it or hate it, and we know where I stand Wink  With razors like that, you really have to try them for yourself, don’t let me dissuade you, just make sure to have a towel and your styptic pencil handy during that first shave with the Wunderbar  Evilgrin

I know that people say the ATT S1 is one of the smoothest slants out there, with great efficiency to boot.  I've never really seen anyone say it's too aggressive or watch out, it bites sometimes.  However, the Wunderbar seems to really garner a lot of likes for its efficiency.

I'm a head shaver, and I am always looking for a BBS shave.   I want something that can mow down hair in the least amount of passes, but won't leave me a bloody mess or give me razor burn/rash.  I know the ATT will most likely not draw blood or cause me irritation as easily, but is it as efficient?  If my technique is good, might the Wunderbar be a better choice?

I’ll start by saying that I’m not a head shaver, but I do have a tough beard…..doesn’t really equal out,  but my facial hair does put up fight.

I wish I could answer your question in a satisfying way, but I think you’re probably just going to have to bite the bullet and try one of them and go from there. I mean my personal take is that the ATT S1 should be efficient enough to do what you are looking for, but without the potential drama you might get from the Wunderbar. It would also require less attention during the shaving process, at least IMO.

That said, and considering what you’ve written, maybe start with the S2 Open Comb version of the ATT, which is what I currently have. I’ve owned an S1, but the S2 does seem a bit more efficient, but still not as aggressive as the Wunderbar . The S2 does have a pronounced rake feel that is common to many OC razor designs though.  Not a problem for most, but I have no idea how that would feel on the Dome.

OTH, there’s a case to be made for going straight to the debateably more agressive Wunderbar.

You see, I’ve been absolutely no help whatsoever Confused

For about 10 years I only shaved with straights, and occasionally with slants. I collected slants from pre WWII to modern and accumulated and tried a lot of them. So I gave up straights and slants pretty much when I became infatuated with Wolfman, Charcoal Goods, Blackbird etc.

I've never been a head shaver but if you ask me I'd recommended one of my most recent acquisitions, the new Muhle SS R-41. For me it is an absolutely awesome shaver. Leaves me BBS for as long or longer than any of the aforementioned big time DEs.

Last I looked there was one in the BST where you could buy either the head alone, or the whole razor. Not sure if it is still up, but if you want something that will give you and awesome close shave safely that is what I'd recommend over any slant.

Just when I thought I was narrowing things down, another contender pops up! lol

The Muhle sounds seems beastly in its aggression level. This is not a bad thing; it just means better technique on my part. I do have a dumb question though. It appears that the Muhle and the ATT S2 (mentioned by Forged) are open combs. I've always been under the impression that these were for longer, thicker growth (e.g shaving a beard off), because the open comb allowed the hair to flow through the head of the razor versus being pushed under a bar (closed comb). I hope that made sense. I shave my head every other day, so they're relatively short, yet course, whiskers (are they still considered whiskers on your head?). Does an OC work better just in general, or should I stick with an CC?
