Recommendation for a brand new wet shaver

All good suggestions, for me the starter razor that made the difference was the EJ DE-89 with a sampler pack of blades that should include some GSBs and some Vikings Swords. An EJ best badger brush and some TOBS and/or GFT creams in a tube are a great, good smelling combination. I'd also include an alum block to help with some early irritation that might occur.

I'd recommend a vintage superspeed as well, but I would go with a flair tip preferably 50s. I would also suggest VDH glycerin soap as a preshave and Nivea sensitive ASB. Astras or personna red for blades, both are a good starting point until you get your technique down. Co Bigelow green tube cream, same as Proraso but cheaper and available at Bath and Body works. Any Omega or Semogue boar for a brush.

It's hard to guess what somebody else will like, so I'd personally shy away from recommending specific brands of products, or particular scents. If you want to make recommendations for a new shaver, my suggestion is to just guide them toward the long list of razors and blades that are in their price range and that are on the milder shaving, easy to use, no frills end of the spectrum. There's nothing that will turn someone off to wet shaving faster than having those first few shaves leave them bloody. For shaving soaps and creams, it's important that it be a soap/cream/croap that is easy to lather, that provides good cushion, is very slick and holds plenty of water so that it doesn't dry out quickly on the face. Scents and other variables are a highly personal preference, so he'll have to make those decisions on his own. Lastly, I would direct him to this shaving forum so that he can ask questions and get good advice to help him along the way.

Only thing I'd change in your list is the razor. Go for a vintage Gillette adjustable Fatboy, slim or black beauty. Personally I go with the black beauty. I just got a merkur and it's a OK razor. He uses that and it's to aggressive he'll be turned off. Get the adjustable and start at one he'll love it.
