Hello, everyone!

I am new to the site and excited to be here.

I started DE shaving about 4 years back. After using a Gillette Old Type with mediocre blades, a microtouch from Ross Dress for Less, William's Mug Soap and a scraggly boar brush, I ran screaming back to cartridge razors for a few years! Terrible shaves for quite a while.

Now I am giving it another shot, properly this time. I've got a Gillette New long comb, a tech, a SS Red Tip and a mint condition Slim Adjuatable and I am having much better luck.

I am having some issues with the soap though. I like Clubman, Van Der Hagen isn't bad. I sank about 20 bucks into Proraso White pre shave and shave soap and it just isn't working for me. I get irritation pretty much every time I use it. I understand that it is a near universally respected as a classic product line. But for me the slickness is barely there. Honestly it seems about on par with Gillette Foam in a can.

Am I missing something here? I put some glycerine in it but the friction is barely mitigated. I have tried adding more water. Nothing is working.

I put a bit of money into the Proraso so I can't bring myself to chuck it. Any thoughts?

Thanks

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that your technique needs some work. Not the equipment per se.
Try pre shave prepping your face and using cold vs. hot water.
I see nothing wrong with your soap choices. But you might keep looking for a good blade combo that agrees with you.

Try cutting out the pre shave, it's another factor and quite simply, does not work for everyone in the first place. (Other than provide more moisture; works 100% of the time for that).

As for the lather, it sounds like you may not be loading the brush long enough. Keep working at the tub until you have a real thick whipped cream like lather going, then test out that lather. Add water as needed.

Thanks, for the tips, guys. I will try lathering better and being a bit more careful. I am trying out a lot of things and it can be difficult getting good with so many items at a time.

I use Proraso Red and it is great. Proraso White has menthol in it. Could that be the problem?

I think you may be onto something. Just used Proraso again and it felt like my face was on fire. Menthol on my face that long may just be too strong, ironic because it is a "sensitive skin" formula.

Also I really just dont think Proraso is slick enough for my skin. There are probably many factors, but I think Proraso just isnt right for me. YMMV and all that...

It's sort of like how my mom bought only Pantene shampoo when I was in high school and the stuff made all my hair break off. Some things just don't work like they should.

Update. I tried a little more of a shave using cold filtered water from the kitchen. That might have actually improved the consistency. Will try again later at some point.

I am not a big label reader however, I always look for menthol. I also agree that pre-shave is a waste and it is putting more junk on your face.
