I use tea tree oil diluted with water, and it helps. I've been wondering about witch hazel and I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Yes I mix it myself. Nothing scientific just dump some in it. I try not use to much as I do not like smell of tea tree but love the smell witch hazel. The witch hazel is so refreshing after a shave. It is like aftershave for me which I do not use at all.

I have been using witch hazel for more than 40 years and swear by it. I sometimes add a few drops of essential or fragrance oil into a small bottle of witch hazel to make my own scented version. Thus, I have lavender, rose, peach and other scented witch hazels.

I haven't shaved before showering in a while. I shall try this again before my next shave to see what my face prefers.

Just been trying this over the past few days since I've had some issues with bumps on my upper lip in the past. Just want to say that it's been making a big difference, will probably continue doing it, or at least cooling my face after my shower prior to shaving.

Now with that said, I have a scuttle with a nice big spout that can probably fit some ice cubes. And it is summer here...

I shave before showering almost 95% of the time. I wash my face with Noxema and cold water. I still use warm water to rinse my blade, don't ask me why lol, but I don't use warm or hot water to rinse my face between passes or at the end of the shave.

I personally like it.

bumping this..any other cold water shavers out there?

I had the thought of rubbing an ice cube over the area I'm about to shave (might do this for my next shave, actually) to get my face nice and cold before a shave.

I gave up on this a long time ago as I eventually realized there was no discernible difference in the shaves, for me.
Furthermore, it is too cool and damp where, for most of the year, for me to do this. Shy

Good luck with the ice cubes, Andrew. Smile

celestino, I, too, found no huge difference and prefer the comfort of warm water.  What did surprise me is that a cold water shave actually works as, for some reason, I thought there would be a lot of tugging and nicks and that did not happen.

I shave before showering and usually use cold water (every day since in SE Asia). Yes occasionally with ice water in a scuttle. I don't have a skin irritation problem but do prefer the cold water shave.
