Is it normal for the dial to start at 1 with no blade installed and 1.5 with the blade?

I had two and one started a little before 1 empty and on 1 when a blade was loaded, and the other one started on 1 when empty and about 1 1/4 wit a blade. Not unusual to find adjustable razors like that.

My Progress Starts on the plus whether a blade is loaded or not.

Provided that you are tightening to the same "torque" there should be a small difference.

The threads on the shaft of the top caps on both the Progress and the Variant are M5x0.8.
A blade is generally 0.12mm in thickness so when you put the blade in, you are effectively inserting a spacer of around 1/6th of a turn.

If there isn't this 1/6th difference - all you are doing is just tightening the twist knob to a different torque.
