I think I have a pretty good sense of smell. I'm not sure on my favourite soap, I've been sitting here trying to think of just one but I'd say soap commander respect, xxx and Catie's Bubbles Glacé Herb are up there favourite aftershaves would be Proraso, Floid and Fine.

Good point on the possibility of it being frozen on the way. I guess that could affect things. I've recently sent a sample to someone who knows their bay rum so I'll report back on their thoughts.

James is, IMHO, clearly more obsessed with the performance (which is outstanding) of his soap than he is with the fragrance of it.  Its possible that the differences in the UK and North American market, specifically relating to fragrance, is responsible for my perception of OSP soap being a bit on the mild side fragrance-wise.  Notwithstanding the mild fragrance, I believe that OSP shaving soap is a must have in every serious wet shaver's rotation.
Yes, the last activity on this thread was about a year ago. However, I wanted to jump in and share an experience. I recently received a sample size offering of OSP’s Neroli shaving soap, and am especially blown away by the scent.

First of all, I immensely enjoy the quality of the scent itself. But I also wanted to say that at least in this sample, the scent is very strong. I don’t know if James of OSP has tweaked this feature within the past year, but when I first opened the tiny sample jar, I was punched in the face (in the best possible way) with the awesomeness that is the scent of Neroli.

I should also note that after pressing the sample soap into a larger container and leaving that container open, the scent from the soap filled the entire room very quickly. And this was without any contact with water. So, in my very limited experience with just this one OSP soap so far, there is plenty of scent to go around. When it comes to other characteristics of the soap, I agree with Mark that this is a highly enjoyable quality soap. I’ll definitely try to get my hands on some more OSP soap or cream, and may return to share further experiences. So far, so good!

My 10 gram sample of Sandalwood (OSP) is pretty stout, a 7/10 at least. I imagine a full 4 ounce tub would fairly fill the room with the scent of sandalwood cologne.

I have a tub of the Neroli and it's just a straight up pure Neroli. Wonderful soap & fragrance that fills the bathroom on a wet New England autumn morning. Good stuff!

When I ordered the sample, I wasn’t actually expecting to be wowed by the scent — mainly I was just interested in the performance of the soap, and was prepared for a very mild scent.

Perhaps some of OSP’s soaps are mild while others carry more scent (that’s probably true of most soap makers). I hope to do some more experimenting with them, and am also very interested in the recent addition of shaving creams to their line-up.

I have a couple -- bay rum and sandalwood. Performance is great. Scent is almost nonexistent.

It seems like there might be some batch to batch inconsistencies here. I don't think people's noses would vary that much to say that some have strong scents and others say the scent is nonexistent.

That was my experience with those same two soaps last year.

I guess it could be 1) batch inconsistencies, 2) altered formula, 3) different scent strength depending on which OSP soap it is, 4) other cause that none of us has thought of yet. In any case, I’ll try to get my hands on some more OSP soap to see if there’s a difference. Happy2
