Personally...rather disappointed. Overall, I prefer the older v2. Why?
   - Harder to load and lather
   - Not as slick
   - Not as protective/cushioning
  - Post shave feel has actually decreased a bit

Ruds gave it a 101...which I don’t agree with at all..

Bottom line...I’m done with Talbot...Until they bring back v2...or correct it with a v4...

I wasn't impressed with either and sold my sets. There are just so many better options out there.
They're good, but not good enough to justify the hype.

I agree. I sound V2 much better for me. I was really expecting an outstanding soap and was let down. This also really made me realize that the shave score idea is nothing to be taken seriously. To say that this soap is in the same class as Grooming Dept Kairos, A&E Kaizen or any of the other top contenders is just jot true IMHO. Sucks because I think Chad is a really great person but I just do not think this soap is in the elite class.

I really disliked the scent of both Island and Okuma so I didn’t even bother to see how the base performed.

Personally, I have hit peak soap.  I’m tired of chasing all the new releases.  Going forward, I plan to just support my two favorites Grooming Dept and A&E.

I evaluate a lot of soaps and have evaluated nearly all of the top artisan soaps currently available. I had high expectations for Talbot Shaving v3. I was looking for it to be an elite base. However, like many of you, I was disappointed. Here is how I compared it to the v2 base:

V2 V3
Ease of Loading 10 10
Ease of Lathering 9 9
Primary Slickness 9 9
Residual Slickness 9 9
Cushion/Protection 10 9
Post Shave Conditioning 10 9.5

Combined score 57 55.5

Thus, like many of you, I preferred the V2 base to the new V3 base. In comparison, I rate the very best soaps in my den as 10/10 on all metrics plus the post shave conditioning on some of them lasts for so long after the shave that I give them a bonus point, rating them 11/10. Thus, V3 is not even close to being an elite soap.

There are not many instances in which I disagree with the Ruds Shave Score for a soap, but I believe the rating it received was exceedingly generous.

That’s disappointing. I’ve been a huge talbot fan for years and have considered his V2 base one of my top 3 favorites. To be honest, Chads V2 base is still better than 99% of the bases in the business and didnt need to be improved upon. Some of the scents haven’t really been for me and I’m hoping to see more collabs. How awesome would it be to see talbot and APR team up?

Follow-up....

The real stars of the show are the accompanying Maol aftershaves. The scents are much much better than the soaps. And his new v2 base Is superb.

All his soaps are very limited releases...and typically sell out within days. His latest two soaps...Island and Okuma are the only ones in v3. In the US they’re available only at WestCoastShaving when released. Best way to find out about new releases is to follow Talbot on FB and Instagram....

His stated goal was just to improve the post shave. However...in his quest to do that he really negatively impacted the whole base. Tragic...

I totally disagree with your entire assessment of the soap base except for possibly the cushion part. That’s never a metric I cared about. To say it’s harder to lather though is laughable to me and to say it’s not as slick, maybe more.
