Hello all,

I have recently acquired a Genesis razor today; via trade from Wet Shaving Enablers Buy, Sell, & Trade group on Facebook.

I just had my first shave with it and I am amazed at the differences between the two. The razor was much more efficient and smoother then the Core v2. And let me preface this by saying that the word smooth at any level is hard to achieve on my neck.

My neck consist of major swirls and micro bumps that a razor can easily get snagged on; leading to a great deal of frustration. The Oneblade Genesis is the first razor I've experienced that could not only give a BBS shave without irritation but could also do so with no snagging at any point.

I had a somewhat similar experience when using the Core v2 but it was much less inefficient and snagged quite a bit; which I do not attribute to possible issues with the feather blade as I cork all my blades upon their first use.

This lead to me wonder why there is such a different between the two- minus the obvious weight difference; which I believe is somewhat offset-ted considering one can apply much more blade pressure to the Core as opposed to the Genesis. I even went to the extreme of applying similar pressure with the Genesis just to see what would happen; as to not ruin my original findings I did so after I finished my initial shave. The result of the experiment was a ton of nicks and weepers. Which was surprising considering I could of hired a macho man to shave me with as much force as possible using the Core v2 and probably not even get a BBS shave. This had me even more curious at what would cause such a dramatic difference between the two.

So I fired up my Samsung S8 camera, set it to 4k picture mode, took two photo, and did some comparison that you can see using the link below.

https://i.imgur.com/5QAzJfX.jpg

Since it is impossible to get identical images I used the length of the blade to approximate measurements between the two razor. What is interesting is that the two blades share similar bottom guard length but with the Genesis you could see more of the blade past the upper guard; measuring about 13% more. This isn't an end all be all comparison as I lack the tools to do a defined comparison between the razors balance point, angle of the blade, and the action of the pivot all of which would have a major effect on how the blade shaves.

I just though this would be an interesting topic for those who wanted to see maybe I little more insight on possible differences between the two razors.

My opinion? From what I have read the core sucks, but I haven't tried it. I have used the genesis, but there is no way in HELL I'm paying $400 for one. I have a $5 super speed that can give me the same BBS shave.

What Genesis do you have the V1 or V2? Your right either on of the Genesis versions is more efficient that the Core V2 and more so the Genesis V2 as it is more efficient than the 1st version. Also have you tried modifying a Gem PTFE blade for your Genesis. I much prefer the Gem blade to the Feather which I can only get 2 shaves out of. An your right the Genesis is only one of two razors in my den that I can go north, south, east or west across my neck and especially my Adams apple and bad cowlick and not get a weeper or irritation. The other razor I can do that with is my Schick O Ring Clone from ebabershop.com using a Schick Twin 11 blade, These are only available in Japan but can be ordered on eBay. I've got 21 shaves so far and it's showing no signs of dullness. BTW the Twin is not a cartridge blade although it sounds like one. Funny thing is the O Ring is even more efficient than the Genesis. I did a side by side shave comparison on another site and the O Ring was a little closer shaving and it's only $34.00!

Long term reader, just registered today. I'm a member of most of the other shaving forums and have been wet shaving for several years now after initially starting it while serving in the military... I know I'm resurrecting a thread from a year ago, but do you modify the Gem blade the same way as depicted in the photo with a set of Nibblers? I just picked up a Genesis V2 and plan on trying this once it arrives. I've read mixed reviews and stories of success. I was curious if you were modifying yours in the same way. I have used the FHS-10 blades before and they just don't last for me. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have tried modified GEM blades in Genesis V2, with that nibbing tool in the picture. While it works, the blade feels dull and tuggy. The shaves with modified GEMs weren't nearly as smooth or comfortable as the Feather blades. It is a shame as FHS blades last only 2 shaves for me.

I should note that I love GEM blades in my GEM style razors (1912, Featherweight, Sabre).

Hmm, well that's not what I wanted to hear... I guess I'll have to see how it goes. The typical "YMMV" lol.

I get excellent shaves with the FHS-10 blades, but I get fantastic shaves with the modified GEM blades - typically skin friendly and often glass smooth.  The GEM blades last much longer too.

I use a pair of pliers to despine the blades, and the nibbling tool shown in the picture to trim the edges.  FWIW, it helps me to leave the wrapper on during the whole process.  It took me a few blades to get the knack, but it goes very quickly now.   Be sure to use GEM SS PTFE coated blades, which can be obtained from Connaught, Bullgoose, or the Razor Blade Co.  If you get a 100 pack and it is marked 62-0178, you are okay.  RB Co. lists them under 62-0165 but delivers GEM 62-0178.

Yeah I got a 100 pack from Connaught shaving online... Great pricing and service but their website could use an overhaul by a legitimate website designer ?. I use them in a couple vintage Gem razors. I'll give it a try when I get the Genesis and I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully I'll be on the positive end of YMMV.

Good luck with the GEMs, and the Genesis too.

I tuned in to the GEM PTFEs about the time I thought I was becoming a Schickaholic for sure.  Schick injector and GEM are now my favorite formats, although I love my OneBlade Genesis regardless of the controversy that surrounds it, and even with the (short-lived and high-priced) FHS-10 blades.  I've got some great Schick and GEM razors already, but I'm already Jonesing for a Blackland Sabre and a Mingoose lol.
