To those that have tried the brand new base, is there any animal scent to it? I am an enormous fan of the bison base but after I started hearing about Icarus base animal smell I passed as for some reason If there is anything animal to pick up in a soap I will find it. To this day some Stirling soaps still smell like animal to me.

I have not tried icarus or the new base but here is post from reddit r/wetshaving. I think an important note is that milksteak tester was unscented.

"Apparently bison tallow has a smell, but the worst offender in Icarus was the lamb tallow. I have an unscented Milksteak tester and it did have a little bit of a smell when it first arrived, but certainly less than fresh Icarus and very little funk remains after 2 weeks or so.

That has been my experience with Icarus as well though -- on some scents I could definitely detect the barnyard (a bit from Chaipre, TSM, Shore, Contemplation) but not at all with other scents (Scrum, Weinstrasse) when I first got the soap. Mostly though, Icarus base smells like oatmeal to me once the funk, if any, goes away. Scott was never comfortable releasing Icarus unscented, but Milksteak will be. It would appear that one of the goals of the new base was to cut down on the animal smells, and I am thinking he'll be completely successful in that regard with scented soaps, and mostly there with unscented."

It's interesting to read about the animal or funk smell cause I have used several of the Bison and Icarus base soaps and never smelled anything but the wonderful scent of the soap.

Max I think it all depends on the person. I’m not slagging any soap by any means just describing my use case that typically if there is funk to smell I can smell it. Sounds like unless I get some samples I might be on the fence with this new base as well.

Thanks for the above post gregcss

I hear ya!. It reminds me of MWF which many adore but for me smells like a wet sheep  Big Grin so yes, some are more sensitive or respond differently to a certain odor. I'll definitely be hopping on the milksteak wagon in a a few hours. Haven't decided which scent(s) yet.

I just ordered the Yuzu/Rose/Patchouli in the new milksteak soap base so I will let you know how the scent is.

I got some barnyard smell of my tub off Icarus Dirtyver. Not enough to ruin the scent, but it's there each time I use it.

With the unscented Milksteak base (with no added scent to mask any possible smells) the barnyard is significantly less. I get just the smallest whiff of funk when I take a good sniff from the tub - I don't get any barnyard from the lather on my face. So, I think for me any added scent will completely mask the barnyard.

My tub of Icarus Dirtyver molded and I always left the top off the tub for the day to air dry.  Huh  I had to toss it after conferring with the maker. However, since I love the Dirtyver scent so much I ordered a Milksteak version today and have high hopes for it.

I guess being mostly an unscented soap user I’m pretty immune to any funk from animal tallow. Never an issue with unscented Bison. I ordered some of the unscented Milksteak so I’ll see how that goes but I’m sure it’ll be great.

I'm looking forward to trying a number of scents I've been interested in with the updated base. I really enjoy Icarus, so any improvement on it should be wonderful for me.
