Conversely, every razor that I've loved impressed me right from the first go...and continued to
improve as I used it.

I fall into that camp as well. I loved the Gillette Tech & Schick Krona from the first stroke. Same for my first Schick injector, a G 1 Model. There's a good reason these razors were incredibly popular in their day:  they worked.

I agree.  Theres several factors in play.  I'm in Canada and International returns are just a pain so generally I won't even buy the item in the first place if its big ticket or has a higher than normal likelihood of satisfaction issues.  Take that for what its worth, but seriously, when the cost of return shipping can be more than the cost of the item and then theres having to deal with tax and duty refunds etc etc etc.  So point taken.
