mystic waters

I only have Mystic Waters soaps in my fall rotation and I forgot how incredible they were until a couple of weeks ago.  For me, Declaration Grooming and the Wholly Kaw soaps were super top tier.  I have become a bit more budget minded lately however, with so many soapmakers raising cost of their luxury items to well over 20$.  I pulled out Mystic Bay Rum and had a shave that almost rivaled that of DG/WK.  If one starts off dry, gets that super pasty lather and just drips water, the lather becomes extremely slick and protective.  In addition, the post shave of Mystic Waters is my absolute favorite.  Finally, the price.  I'm going to have a very very hard time paying above 12 or 13 bucks for a soap after the shaves I've had recently with Stirling and Mystic Waters.  Egyptian Dragon is such an amazing scent too, and something truly different in the artisan shave world and the Bay Rum is also singular.

Good points. None of the newer more expensive soaps give me a better shave, or a better post than MW. They do tend to be easier to lather but is it worth the extra money? Not sure.  And agree on Egyptian Dragon. That scent is one of my all time favorites.

After eight years of, principally, using this soap and after having tried the majority of the soaps available, newer artisan ones included, I still find this soap to be superb, especially, for its price and post shave.

+4 Still great soap in every way and still at a great bargain!
My top 3 soaps (1) Stirling (2) Mikes (3) Mystic water all have great performance at affordable prices! IMO they are very hard to beat!

+5 I hate all of you because I thought I was done buying soap.

MW is an excellent soap IF you can get the lather to hold. I had good luck in my first couple shaves - some of the best shaves ever. But afterwards I could not get the lather to hold. Maybe the public water changed something (ex. chlorine to chloramine seasonal change). Not sure. I can get a monster, thick lather going but as I put it on a clean face it dissipates quickly - to the point where it is gone before shaving the last 1/3 of my face.

PS I do like the scents a lot

There are lots of people who try Mystic Waters and have trouble with dissipating lather.  My advice is always to load more product.  Just keep loading and building (adding water a bit at a time) the lather on the puck until the lather you have generated looks exactly like something you want to shave with.  Rather than problems with water hardness or anything else I think most who experience this problem simply didn't start with enough product to begin with or added too much water for the amount of product they had loaded. I can make a dissipating lather with any soap and the culprit is always the same, not enough product used to make a proper lather  Before anyone who has experienced dissipating lather with Mystic Waters soap jumps all over me for suggesting such a simple, and seemingly obvious solution,  and thinks their hard water is the problem just go grab ANY brush and a puck of Mystic Waters soap and try it out AGAIN. Work at it until you figure it out.  Continue to build until you've demonstrated to yourself how much you need to load. You'll know you've arrived when you generate this kind of lather (see photo below). You will be amazed at how well this approach works. Build it on the puck until it looks like a lather you want to shave with.  You'll think you're wasting soap, but you won't be, you'll just be building the best lather you've experienced thus far!  Build your lather on the puck, it works every time with any soap.

I DON'T own any Mystic Waters soap so I am guessing I could do the same and follow your method and get the same results. Not to derail this thread, but I am wondering how you do this with Mitchells Wool Fat soap? This soap is a love/hate thing with me. Yep. The method even works with MWF...  And I also have hard water...  Honestly though, I have never seen in MWF what everyone else seems to see.  It's a good soap, but developing this lather takes FOREVER!   There are so many other soaps that I would rather shave with. I honestly can't remember the last time is used MWF.

Mystic Waters soap is like White Lava and has a silky look. The lather explodes when I face lather. I use the unscented and I have zero irritation.

You can also use Cris technique from Another Cut Above or a combination or Merkur Mans brush loading and Cris’ face lather technique. Either way, puffy clouds form on your face
