I just sifted through all 55 pages of this thread (WOW!) and didn't see any Eva Cassidy, so here goes.

I've been listening to some Queen this morning, from their Wembley Live Aid performance. Someone once said that one thing that distinguishes great performers is that they hold nothing back, that they 'leave it all on the stage.' That is certainly true of Freddie Mercury, who knew at the time that he had AIDS, as was portrayed in the recent movie about him. At.that time, the mid-1980s, I had not yet become a Queen fan. I guess partly it was because I was just too conservative to appreciate them. Partially it was because I was a medical student/resident at that time, and some of the first hospital patients for whom I provided care were men dying from AIDS complications, which were horrifying; it sort of colored my perception of gay men and of Freddie. In my older age I've come to like Queen's performances more, and I'm in awe of the power that Freddie had over the huge audiences.

I couldn't avoid hearing some Adam Lambert this morning, because my wife - one of the 'Glamberts' who has followed blogs about him for years since his American Idol days - was playing his newest single release in the next room. I generally have not been fond of his choices in music to perform, which tend toward techno, but when the music is show songs or more traditional pop, such as the Cher piece in this video, he is one the finest young stylists around.

It seems wrong to call 2000 "back in the day", but it feels that way sometimes.  Anyway, back in 2000, when Borders Books still thrived and you could listen to whole CDs in the store, I chanced upon the album "Grateful" by John Bucchino.  After almost 20 years, Grateful is still among my favorite albums, combining powerful lyrics and music to create strong stories.  Here are two selections from Grateful.

The first, "A Powerful Man", is a story that many of us will relate to.  I like the way Bucchino shifts between 2/4, 3/4, 4/4 and 7/8 meter to make the lyrics flow.

The second, "Not a Cloud in the Sky", is rather personal to me, but still quite universal I think.  Bucchino, who Wikipedia describes as "an 'out' gay composer", wrote this in memory of his brother, who died of AIDS.  My wife and I had a very close gay friend who was dying of cancer, and we bought the album for him when we found out he had never heard of John Bucchino.  IMO you need to hear the whole album to understand why, but be that as it may, our friend passed away shortly before we were heading to the beach to give it to him.  If you have ever watched someone go through a more or less slow goodbye, you will probably recognize something in this song.  (BTW the 40 seconds of opening patter are actually quite relevant to the song itself.)

The accords I build are inspired by fond memories. And I feel like music goes hand in hand with that experience. So, I put together a Spotify playlist to mirror the part of me I put into Bufflehead. Have a listen. I hope you enjoy.
