How many shaves do you get from your soaps?

Has anyone tracked this? I had a tub of cella I was trying to use up and I felt like it lasted forever. Versus tallow and steel for example it definitely lasted longer. Which top end soaps will last the longest? Just some thoughts I've had on soaps and would love to here what others are experiencing. Thanks !

I don't keep track anymore but I did track several soaps as a test once. All you have to do is weight the soap before you use it and then weight it again after a couple weeks or longer, while tracking the number of shaves as well. Then simply do the math and you will have the amount per shave that you use, which you can use to estimate how many shaves the jar will provide. I tend to load heavy so depending on the consistency of my soaps, I average about 1.5g to 2g per shave.

I stopped worrying about the number of shaves after accumulating too many soaps. To be honest I wish I could use them up faster just to reduce my den. I would like to get back to rotating a small number of soaps, say 3 or 4. I figure I would get about 2 months out of a 4oz artisan soap on average if I shaved every day, and perhaps 3 to 4 months from a harder soap like SV. Keep in mind though that I load heavy. I suspect someone could double my numbers if they loaded less. Also, if you only shave every other day or a few times a week that would significantly increase the number of shaves.

Cella can last awhile I have both the tub & the brick but triple milled soaps usually last the longest, like The Art Of Shaving Tallow. I also noticed Mikes Natural Soaps outlasts most other soaps that are not triple milled.

Although shaving soaps are a consumable, they take a long time to consume. Most people, even heavy every day shavers aren't using much more than 3-4 jars a year. Some guys shave all year with 1 triple milled puck.”




Software accumulation often produces the most frustrating comments from forum members I’ve read over the years. I had somewhere around 65 jars at one point. 5 containers a year was 13 years of soap deteriorating on the shelf. One of the joys of wet shaving for me now is actually finishing a jar and keeping a limit but that goes against much of the ebb and flow of a forums character.

I average somewhere around 13 passes per oz.

There are many variables to consider when asking this question as it depends on the size and density of your knot/brush and how dense you want your lather.
I believe an average length of time that a 4 oz tub of soap would last you using a typical 24-28mm brush with a moderate loading time of 30-45 seconds would be 30-45 days.

I’ve been at this thing over four years, and all of my soaps are at least 85% full. Think I have too many?

If I could get myself to have willpower I'd knock myself down to just a handful of soaps and would be able to measure out how many soaps to get to the bottom of a given tub.
As it stands, my self-control sucks and I'll never get any of these soaps finished!

I started the year once, in 2016 actually, with a brand new tub of Valobra Fougere.

By the time I was done with it I was just about sick of it. I like Valobra Fougere but it was so boring. I used the heck out of it. Didn't use it for a while afterwards too.

40 shaves and I probably could have stretched it to 60 without any loss of performance. Towards the end I was looking for it to be done because I wanted a change. Probably rinsed way too much of it down the drain.
