Review begins at the second paragraph!
Earlier this year I read a post about 4 prototype samples being tested from a razor manufacturer in Turkey I had not previously known about. I checked out the website which was basically empty at the time. Close to moving on I figured I'd shoot the contact listed on the site a request for information. I quickly received an email from Murat, the owner. He responded in Turkish after seeing my name, and after establishing that my Turkish sucks he kindly continued the conversation in English.
I was not initially motivated to buy this razor as the exposure was limited coupled with the price tag of 690$. Having owned most North American artisan razors such as Wolfman, Karve, Yates, H&S, PAA, Rex, and ATT(US made for my purchase) I was allowing myself to linger on the fence longer than usual due to the prospect of investing in a small shop near my hometown in Turkey. Plus there were glowing reviews from people I trust, who's den far exceeds my own.
I decided to go for it. It took three weeks to sell off enough inventory to fund it. Murat took the time to explain the razor, and send me production photos(I'm having a custom stand made). It arrived yesterday afternoon to my surprise.
Pre-shave review: This razor arrived in what I can only describe as the most magnificent razor coffin in this hobby (I spent 600$ on a H&S razor which came in a plastic lunch box). The wooden case was painted, upholstered, stitched, and assembled with a magnetic closure. There was plenty of heft to it similar to a high end watch case. The razor is finished on par with my basic polish wolfman. The grip feels great in the hand. Knurling would be more appropriate for something this heavy, but would diminish the aesthetics greatly(for me). Even with wet hands it always felt safe in my grip.
Post-Shave review: The Sailor is a 2 piece razor similar to the Rex. I twisted the gold dial to loosen the head, popped in a Med Prep Personna, and set it to 3 of 6. Full disclosure I despised my previous adjustable the Rex Ambassador. I can't sell it because it was a gift from the Mrs so it just sits in the corner. I was worried this would be a "once in a while" razor as well , but I couldn't be more wrong. There is just enough blade feel at the 3 setting (of 6) to know that the angle was locked in. Efficiency was on par with Karve plate E with the smoothness of C. Also similar to the WR2 1.25. I shaved with my wolfman 1.25 yesterday afternoon so I has very little growth. 2 Passes (WTG, ATG) gave me a BBS with very little splash sting. This would likely be attributed to shaving less than 24 hrs after using my 1.25. I could have easily toned it down to 1 or 2, but the 3 felt so smooth and didn't require any buffing. Any questions ask away
Disclosure: I bought this razor at full price with my own money.
