For those who don't know, I periodically shave half my face with one soap and the other half with a different one. It's too hard to remember one day to the next for comparison purposes.
What I've found from this exercise is that there are three classes of soap for me:
1. Elite
2. Very, very good
3. The discard pile
I've found that the differences between the Elite and the Very, Very Good are small.
So, with that out of the way Tabac vs Klar Seifen
Scent
Hands down the Klar Sport. People either love or hate the Tabac scent and I'm in the latter category. Having said that, I let the Tabac sit out for a couple of weeks and it really tames the beast.
Loading the brush
The tall thin Klar soap puck and container gets on my last nerve. Tabac is better, though strongly prefer the four inch packaging used by Stirling and B&M.
The Foam
I like really thick foam. Tabac is definitely thicker. This is a personal preference which is separate from performance.
Cushion and Glide
I usually break these out. I was surprised to find that there is a noticeable difference between the performance of these two fine soaps with Klar being better. I try pair Face Off soaps where they both have a fighting chance. This is the first time there has been a noticeable difference between the soaps with performance. Don't get me wrong. Tabac is a very, very good soap base. It has a home in my stable and I will definitely continue using it.
The difference is not enough that I would buy Klar and wouldn't buy Tabac. I'll come back to what I said previously. The difference between the Very, Very Good and Elite soaps isn't that much. I think it was much bigger in the past, though the resurgence of classic shaving has driven innovation.
In summary, they are both great soaps. Tabac costs significantly less the Klar.
