I had one or two of the earlier synthetic brushes but was never happy with them. Then, I started hearing how much better they had become and after seeing some positive reviews about the Plisson Pour L'Occitane Synthetic, I decided to take a chance again.  It was love at first use.  It makes incredible lather and is extremely gentle on my face.  Add to that the fact that synthetic brushes dry really quickly and I knew I had a winner on my hands.

Does anyone else have a particular synthetic brush that is enjoyed as much or more as any badger, boar, horsehair, or blend that might be in your shave den?  Here is my L'Occitane:

Plisson is the only synthetic I've ever used, but I've heard that the new Muhle, Omega, and Grooming Company brushes are very good as well.

I have a brand new Plisson L'Occitane Synthetic in my shaving drawer that I haven't used yet. I tend to like my lofts closer to 50mm, so the Plisson might be too floppy for me...isn't it closer to 54-55mm? I may sell it to replace it with something else.

Mühle Black Fibre
Custom Mühle Black Fibre with lower loft
Mühle STF

Plisson with acetate handle

Synthetics I currently use:

Brian, unless there is more than one variety, I thought the L'Occitane Plisson was faux wood, a plastic of some sort.

I believe Brian had the knot removed from one of the stock Plissons and transferred into a custom handle, though I'm sure he will correct me if I'm mistaken.

Ah, okay. Thanks, Will.

The Plisson pour L'Occitane has a heavily lacquered real wood handle, and that is the only one available through L'Occitane stores. But Plisson sells the same brush directly with a huge variety of handles: http://blaireauxplisson.com/en/39-shavingbrushes-fiber

P.S. I had a Muhle Black Fibre brush that I absolutely loved, but then I sold it shortly after I bought one of the Plisson synthetics, because the Plisson was just so much better.

My Plissons are 4 currently. I have two from L'Occitane from before the label change where they added "Pour L'Occitane" or whatever to it. As was said above it is a real wood handle (though I forget what they claim it to be) with a laquer top coat (which in some can be a piss-poor effort). My other two are from Plisson in France with the acetate material; one is Pearly Gray & the other is Faux Horn.

To my senses the knots in all 4 are the same. I just prefer the extra heft, feel, & looks of the acetate handles over the wood ones.
