An old article from 2010! Most brands have stopped using some of these ingredients, but some are still around. Are there any ingredients in shaving products that make you shy away from using those products? It'd be great if you don't mention the brands. Let's keep it general. I personally wont use products that contain Boric Acid, Phenoxetol or Mica.

As long as it's only one of the ingredients and it's toward the last 2 or 3 items in the ingredient list, I don't worry too much. If a soap has 2 or 3 of the ingredients and/or they are higher up in the list, then I might consider something else. My primary motivation is skin sensitivity more than anything else though.

I still have cream where parabens were used as preservative, I don't worry about it even a little, the amounts are insignificant.

Parabens. Triethanolamine.

I remember in junior high school we made soap in chemistry class, and what I most remember is that it was a very simple process. Whether it's simple to make a shaving soap that will have a reasonable shelf life and weather the rigors of shipping, etc. I don't know. What I do know is that I look for soaps with as few ingredients as possible. Martin de Candre, arguably one of the top shaving soaps in the world, has the following ingredient list: stearic acid, water, coconut acid, potassium hydroxide, glycerin, fragrance.

XPEC, another top soap, has a similarly simple list of ingredients. I try to stick to soaps that keep it simple.

Detergents. I prefer real soap now to anything with sls, sles, etc. I like the performance and the feel.

Now that you mention detergents, it would be nice if someone in the artisan community manufactured an all-natural laundry soap... I've seen easy DIY recipes on the net, but this could be a good product for someone to make...

I'm actually thought about it. It's a fairly straightforward process, and real soap+borax is low-sudsing so it works in HE machines.

However, the amount necessary plus the cost of shipping that much weight makes me think it might not be worth it.

hmm... What about "laundry powder?" Concentrated fragrance in a bar soap that would help it come through, grated or pressed into a powder? Then instructions on a mixing ratio with borax?

The two ingredients I have been avoiding lately are lanolin (ingrown hairs) and cinnamon (burning). Unfortunately there are a lot of great soaps made with lanolin.
