First few shaves with the Drakkant prototype have been quite enjoyable. I have to say this razor has a lot going for it. It’s quite the looker, it has a design aesthetic that reminds me of the Blackbird, tough and functional but not rough. I love the handle (even more if it were a quarter inch shorter) it’s got a grippy substantial feel, I have no concerns about dropping this razor. The top cap design is eye catching and different then every other razor out there. The baseplate is probably my first area that I may have a critique about, not that it’s a big one and that is I get a slight drag/suction sensation, it’s easily overcome but I’m not sure if it’s the way the grooves in the comb are cut or the finishing. I certainly wouldn’t want the finish any other way, I believe it suits this razor’s appearance perfectly. Now the shaves, this is a subjective thing I know YMMV as many like to say but I’m an everyday early morning shaver and I’m looking for a drama free DFS, I’ll save my R41 for a weekend shave. All my shaves to this point have been with a Gillette Nacet loaded as I find it tends to work in any razor, I have to say with some buffing I get a great shave, this razor feels safe enough that I believe you’d have to work to try and nick yourself or get irritation. For a prototype and first razor out of the gate I think Aylsworth has hit that sweet spot for 90% of shavers with this geometry. My next few shaves before moving it on will be with a Feather blade, I find that there are a few razors that have similar characteristics and benefit from it. Razors that I’d put in the ballpark of the Drakkant are the Blackland Era level 4 plate, the Karve Overlander and the Paradigm Diamondback. I’d like to thank Aylsworth for making the razor available for this pass around and I’m glad I jumped on the preorder for this.
