2022 DFR (Damn Fine Restraint)

May is the fifth month of the year, so that means I had to restrain my impulse to buy more shave gear for five days straight. Easy peasy. In fact, here we are on day six, and I'm not hankering to order anything. What's better, the items I was eyeballing with so much interest at the end of April no longer seem that necessary. The buying bug will surely bite again, just like it did last month, when I felt compelled to order a new razor. But for now it's kind of pleasant to sit here calm and easy not worrying if the missus is going to beat me to the mailbox.

Warm greetings to all Damn Fine Restraint members. I hope to join you all since I was able to buy a huge bundle of soaps last month that should easily last me the next couple of years at the pace I use them.

I used to spend a lot of time hunting for razors and brushes, but not anymore. I'll persuade myself that I have enough brushes and that my two razors are plenty.

Hopefully, I can stay in this renowned company and avoid succumbing to temptation.

Eight days in, and I am still good for May (so far). Furthest I have made it since "committing to frugality" this year.

All sorts of riff-raff have been seen on these pages. Obviously I am NOT speaking of myself!! 

Your plan sounds good. Enjoy what you have, enjoy the time getting that really comfortable and perfect shave. We all hanker for the newest (or the oldest, or most unique, etc), and that can be part of the fun. What I am learning is that pursuit isn't as rewarding as contentment with the great stuff I have. And allow yourself some leeway to enjoy pursuit and acquisition on occasion. There is this book HighSpeed has mentioned (and I started but have to finish!) about loving people and using things (or something like that. You get the point!) that puts this all into perspective for me.

Thank you for your support; I find that the search for some elusive object is often more enjoyable than the eventual purchase, which can result in buyers remorse since the item rarely lives up to the ideal created by reviews, SOTD etc.

The avatar is from a vintage post card, which I chose because I have a ginger and white cat named Alfie who looks a lot like the dapper chap in the hat.

Our home is controlled by two guys, Tyler and Sylvester, who were strays and adopted us at the end of July last year. Sylvester loves to jump into the sink prior to water being turned on, because ??? We love  our guys!



Sylvester is only 18 months, so he rarely is still!

"Gabriel" was the ginger tabby cat that ruled our house once upon a very long time ago. Several cats came and went, but Gabriel was the long-standing arch-angel of cats that held a position of honor.

For acquisitions, learning contentment and taking one's time is essential to enjoyment and sanity. The 5 razors I acquired originally remain my very favorites. My curiosity for most things has been satisfied. Soaps never ever live up to my expectations, and I have enough for over a decade, maybe close to two. A recent McD acquisition scratched my last itch.

Sharing the joy of traditional shaving has been a great activity. I have overwhelmed a recent convert with all the soaps, razors, and blades I have given him, and he has gotten a friend interested. Good times.

That is some excellent advice Eric.  The book is Love People, Use Things: Because the Opposite Never Works.  IIRC I was at page 50 when I last mentioned it.   I am currently at page 95.  As is often the case, I am reading several books at the moment.  Some get put aside from time-to-time; some get taken out of the line up; and others get finished eventually.  My guess is that this book, which is too challenging to be a nonstop page-turner for me, will get finished eventually.  At 50 pages in, it was clearly not a book about asceticism, but a book about purchasing wisely, making sure our purchases bring us stress-free joy, and about living a life where we own our stuff and not the other way round.  At 95 pages the context seems broader than purchases, but about how we live and how we make a broader range of decisions than purchasing alone.  OT1H I sometimes wonder where the authors are going, and do I want to come along?  OTOH I am still turning the pages for whatever reasons, which strikes me as an endorsement of sorts, if a qualified one.
