Sailor Love. Even though the B&R Adjustable is not a Sailor, it still fits in this line up. I never bought the first Sailor because of the short handle and now I am loving the 2021 with its short handle.

Out of curiosity I used a Kai blade for last nights shave and this morning shave. To my surprise it worked really well, got two very pleasant shaves (yesterday evening setting 5 and  today setting 6). Not aggressive at all (for me that is).

Not to be seen as a negative comment, we all have or way of doing things but the difference in shaving ritual compared to the video's: I only work in the lather for a minute at the most (I know .... but this gives me better results then longer), angle is about the same but main difference is that within a pass I never ever go twice over the same spot (in the video I noticed that within one pass some areas where shaved like up to ten times in the same spot, again we all have or preferences but for me that would mean irritation no matter what razor or blade.)

Did a comparison between the 2020 and 2021 this morning, still prefer the 2020 but they are close. Have a nice shave!

It is really hard to choose between the 2020&2021. They both give the same results with each giving a different feel.

I've just completed my first shave with the 2021 Sailor.

SOTD setup

Rocnel Sailor 2021

Wilkinson Sword Super Sword-edge - Vintage made in England(day 10)

SV Dolomiti Beta 4.0, face lathered.

Simpsons Chubby 1 manchurian

Thayers WH

Amouage Figment

My main comparison razor is the Rex Ambassador which I used yesterday, and have used in my rotation for a bit over one year, n “O” serial number from 2019 version.  I'm quite happy using the Rex set on 4, and in general I prefer more blade forward/close shaving razors.

I started the first XTG/WTG pass using setting 3.  The closeness of shave was the equivalent of Rex Ambassador set on about 2.5-3, but the comfort, glide and smoothness significantly better. The Rex tends to feel like dragging on my face, the sailor in this instance just glided and scraped off the stubble with satisfying auditable feedback.

Second pass I went ATG through neck area and found it very, very comfortable, and then a nose-to-chin pass (mostly WTG on my face).

Third pass, mostly ATG, dialed up to 4 on the Sailor.  The outcome of that was very very smooth without any irritation or discomfort. My upper lip area is the smoothest it’s ever been with any DE in memory, it just shaved so close and smoothly through my toughest area.  I couldn't really tell how close it was until I rinsed off my face and had that wtf moment, where you have achieved an accidental BBS and no side effects.  I just didn't make any sense how close and comfortable the shave was.

9hours later:

My face has remained smooth and comfortable despite no post-shave product and having used SV 4.0 which is not that moisturizing, once again it makes no sense to me (in a good way).

Neck and cheek area is still BBS, upper lip stubble starting to return.

===

It's quite possible the Wilkinson sword blades are skewing my perspective here, as they are generally sublime if the razor is decent. But I've used the same blade rotating between a Gillette New Improved, Rex Ambassador, WR2 1.45 and by far the best shave has been today with the Sailor.  I'm not writing off the WR2 as I'm still learning it.  Rex's days in my rotation/den are numbered.

The WR2 1.45 OC arrived to me only last week, with that I haven't needed more than 1-2 passes with that yet, so it’s too early to draw fair comparisons there until I dial up the Sailor’s blade gap with another blades.

I’ll try a fresh feather blade soon and and see how that goes.

//note post had been edited on 18/06, correcting mention of WR2 1.55 OC to 1.45 OC

My first shave with the 2021 Sailor.

Sailor 2021 with a Wizamet on its 3rd use
Black Eagle Pretied and River Valley Trading's Dark Lime.

The Wizamet on its 3rd or 4th shave is as good as it gets for me. If I'm going to change settings during a shave my first pass is always ATG. I started on 4 for that and then dialed it up to about 6 for the second WTG pass. That and some touch-ups around my "normal troublesome" areas gave me a BBS, so it is certainly an efficient shaving machine.

Unlike others, I found a bit of drag. I don't want to dwell on this because its really not much - but it was there. Looking at the 2020 vs 2021 TopCaps, I see that the previous one is more polished - this may be the reason. I also know that the soap is not the slickest and next time I will ensure that I use something different and that should sort it.

I definitely prefer the shorter handle and the lower-profile TopCap. I do tend to use a bit of pressure so the weight is a non-issue for me. I'm probably in the minority here but I prefer the number dial in silver and the polished section is a great contrast to the rest of the handle.

It needs a small bit of dialing in, but overall I'm a happy camper.

Clouds  you're tougher than I am if you can go against the grain like that the first pass. Maybe I didn't read that right.

You did read that right. I'm not tough at all, it's just a different way of doing things. Dialing down doesn't make much sense to me and dialing up to shave against the grain only makes a little bit. The first time that I tried it was with the Janus in the hope that I could do a one-pass shave and found that it worked for me.
If I'm using a fixed or not moving the dial, it really doesn't matter.

More than one way to shave of face there you go.
If it works that's what it's all about.

For my morning work shave I did a quick 2 pass shave going WTG & XTG and I used a Kai blade on setting 3 just to see what the Sailor was like loaded with this blade and on setting 3 to see if I felt any harshness or if it felt Toothy as described in the video. It did not is the short story. So I will start off by saying I’m not a huge fan of Kai blades and about the only razor I used to use them in was my old Timeless SS when I first got it years ago and it was recommended by someone but when I used a Polsilver in it for the first time the Timeless never saw a Kai again.

So to me on my face after using both the Feather and Polsilver blades in the Sailor the Kai’s performance was not at the other twos level but with that said I still got a solid BBS and the razor remained smooth but to me the Kai blade just feels wrong for this razor and doesn’t showcase the Sailor at its very best IMO. So in the blade bank the Kai goes.

Twelfth consecutive shave with the 2021 Sailor. Other than the one shave dialed up to XI I've stayed within the first five settings. Just awesome and loving this new addition. It's going to be tough to set it aside.

Have a great day!

PS:
The calibration on mine is just a bit off with a Feather but you can see in the picture that the thickness of the GSB keeps it further from the • at the lowest setting.
