Freddy recently sent me out a few Shark Super Chromes to check out and suggested I might give them a review here on DFS. (thnx again Freddy!!)

Well, I don't know how to write, but I do know how to draw a razor blade across the old stubble. And first words - I was very impressed.

These blades provide an aggressive shave with a great deal of comfort. Kinda like taking a Lexus for a spin. You don't realize you are cruising along full speed because the ride is just so darn smooth!

I had three blades to try out so I decided to pick my two most reliable razors for testing out blades. A 1932 Tech Fattie for one blade followed by a late 40s British Rocket for the remaining two. I find the Tech provides a gentle shave to begin with, so I prefer to check out new blades with a 'safe' razor. The Sharks performed quite admirably in this frame. As I mentioned, there is a smooth feeling to these blades, yet the sharpness is definitely there - I got a comfortable and close shave using the Fattie - and with no nicks. By day three however, I was beginning to feel the blade slow down and found it required a little more pressure to get the job done. Time to change up.

The Rocket offers a more aggressive shaving frame than a Tech yet is solid and offers a blade gap that suits my skin well. Again the blades had a smoothness that I very much appreciated. I found them very similar to Astras in sharpness, yet more like a Derby for smoothness - perhaps a wonderful merging of the two of those blades best assets. I did find with the last two blades as well though, that they began to tire by the third shave and didn't really perform adequately for me on day three.

So, before I get bit over this long ramble on Sharks:

Shark Super Chromes are excellent performing wet shaving blades. They offer a crisply sharp edge with a quality finish that affords a comfortable, effective, and irritation free shave. They tend to hold up well - but for only a couple of shaves. So, if you are a shaver intent on stretching your 2-3 cents, look elsewhere. However, if you are earnestly seeking a great shaving experience - take a swim with a Shark!!!

I agree with your assessment, R-man, and thanks for the great review. The only place where we differ is that I can usually get my customary 7 shaves from one of these blades. I have been using one in my Star DE, easily one of the least aggressive razors in my arsenal, and the combination of the Star/Shark is just about perfect. :)

Right you are, Rocketman. My beard is fairly light and not especially problematic so I should have taken that into account. :ashamed1:

Thanks Rocketman for the this review. I have been contemplating trying the Sharks, and you sure make it seem like 'It's Safe To Go Back In The Water.' I'll give them a try-out. All of a sudden, I am beginning to hear a cello strumming that old Jaws tune... hmmm, must be in my head.

I've been really considering expanding my VERY limited blade selection to the Shark. Right now Derbys pretty much sum up my variety.

Sounds like the Shark really might be a good choice for a serious run.

This was a great review.

Indeed, that movie documents when folks first started getting close shaves with a Shark!!

The 'Sharks' are fast becoming my standard blade. I consider them to be less aggressive than the Feather/Kai blades but I use them with caution in my Futur. I like them best in the 'Rocket'.

Well worth a try.

I saw some good results. Nice and smooth, but the shaves I got didn't seem to last as long. What accounts for something like that?

I went to put a Feather in my razor day before yesterday. Sharks have a white and blue wrapper like the Feathers and I accidentally put a Shark in my razor instead. Sorry to do this to you guys but that thing was dragging like a 5 ton boat anchor. 2 strokes and I knew something was wrong. I replaced it with a Feather and got BBS in 2 passes, something that is rare for me. The kicker was I had 3 days growth and the Feather still knocked it down in 2 passes. I think a good budget blade is the Persona Red like Phil sells and if you want something sharp but not feather sharp then Iridium is great.

I've tried the chromes and they were better than the stainless, however neither were much better than blades like the the red ips that are much cheaper and easier to find over here.

Well, here we go with the old YMMV. I happen to really like the Shark Super Chrome. Of course my beard growth may be completely different than another person's so different blades might react differently. Luckily, blades are one of the least expensive things in our "hobby." Even the more expensive ones like Feathers won't break the bank if you want to give them a try. This is where the ever popular blade sample packs come in so handy. You can try different blades before committing to buy large quantities of any one.
