It is my understanding that the principle purpose of scent in a tallow soap is to mask the scent of the tallow, which otherwise some might find offensive.

So, if there is a non-scented tallow soap, doesn't it stink?

I have been trying out Sudsy Soapery unscented tallow shaving soap.
They also have a non-tallow unscented shaving soap as well.

Agree. I've used all their bases, all are top tier IMO. I slightly prefer the Tallow, but it's not like I'm missing anything when using the other bases, either. Super easy shave and great post. Should have more plaudits IMO.

How do they mask the aroma of the tallow?

Maybe it’s not masked but it’s in the way the soap is processed or in the tallow sources.  No idea, but I don’t smell any tallow.  I pick it up in just about any other base.

Here is the ingredient list:

Aloe Vera Juice, Stearic Acid, Grass Fed Beef Tallow, Duck Fat, Organic Shea Butter, Castor Oil, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Aloe Vera Butter, Organic Kokum Butter, Organic Hemp Seed Butter, Organic Glycerin, Potassium Stearate, Sheep Milk, Camel Milk, Sodium Hydroxide, Grass Fed Bison Tallow, Argan Oil, Organic Camellia Seed Oil, Kukui Nut Oil, Ostrich Oil, EOS Complex, Allantoin, Oat Amino Acids, Silk Amino Acids, Soy/Rice Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid Oil, Organic Vitamin E Oil, Sodium Lactate, Xanthan Gum, Rose Extract, Lanolin, Comfrey Extract, Calendula Extract, Aloe Vera Extract, Rose Hip Extract, Milk Thistle Extract, Chamomile Extract. Capritolin (Natural Preservative).

"Rose Extract".....there is your scent that masks the tallow.

I don’t detect any rose either.  I believe that is there for the skin benefits.

Sir Henry's has no tallow note either. I don't think their unscented is vegan. Can't memeber

In regard to the residual scents, I can add...

MacDuffs has a very soft, almost sweet scent. I think of it as a natural, semi-sweet herbal scent. It is light and could easily be missed. However, if you look for it, it's there and rather pleasant.

In my current tub of Stirling Sheep, it's a rather strong scent of sheep Tallow. My new tub, however, is barely there. Almost like MacDuffs in the sweet, and light scented... But still with a tiny bit of sheep Tallow scent (that Macduffs obviously doesn't have).

If you want something I couldn't find any scent at all in, I'd steer you towards Zingari Man. Their unscented, to my nose, was completely blank. It's also a good performer.

While I didn't get a Tallow stink from Sir Henry's, it definitely wasn't "unscented" to my nose. If I am remembering correctly, it was an earthy scent that was light but definitely present and unmistakable IMO. Still, it's likely just the soap ingredients and wasn't anywhere near offensive.

Finally, I can't specifically speak to Ethos Clean as I have never used it. I did say it was a great choice for top tier, as I've used Ethos scented soaps in the past. They're good stuff. I just don't know how "invisible" they really are.

Now... Did Eric MaineYooper weigh in here? He's the guy I always ask about unscented soaps. He's been scents-less for years.
