It's resin based according to Bruno over at Vintage Scent.
Very interesting when viewed in person, photos don't do it justice.

You still can. I believe Phil at BullGoose still has a few Finest Bristle 2 brushes. Shoot him an email. It's worth the investment. I love mine.
