Why does the article assume "we" needed to eat carbs? We don't. Not even today. Not eating carbs puts the body into ketosis, a very natural state to be in where instead of burning sugar the liver produces ketones as fuel from fats, either consumed or stored reserves. One organ must burn carbs and that's the brain, but there is a process where the body makes the carbs required for that use. You would think the writer would know what I just wrote.

BTW, yeah, I'll pass on eating fermented stomach contents too. There's no way I could ever be hungry enough to do that.

edit: for early man ketosis would have had many benefits, same as it does today. Fat is a much better fuel than carbs, there is simply more energy in fat. One doesn't get hungry in ketosis*. With carbs there's no way to store them long term, so one must eat every few hours. Early man had no way to store carbs in season, that came much later. So in times of plenty when grasses were seeding, fruits were available, etc' they ate carbs and animals to put on fat. Then in the winter when carbs weren't available they went into ketosis because carbs just weren't there. Eating a meal a day is absolutely doable to either get by until spring, or today to lose weight in a safe manner**. The brain works better in ketosis then and now, a fog seems to lift. Many in ketosis have reported this. Being in ketosis reduces the A1c, early man didn't know this but we do now.

* I'm just short of 4 years in ketosis and one meal a day works just fine. Those on a carb diet tell me it's unhealthy, but it's not. Ancient man went into ketosis because he had no choice. Carbs are few and far between outside the growing season. In time they learned how to store carbs.
** That's not all there is to it. It's not an easy way to eat. Research should be done to find out how to do it and get better results. A good multi vitamin should be taken (I take more) and I like to take fiber for bulk. I've known folks who did neither but they also stayed in ketosis for short periods of time. My PCP loves what ketosis has done for me and he tells me to continue what I'm doing. Earlt man didn't have multi vitamins, but they also ate much meat raw due to the cooking methods of the day. Man can live on an all meat diet as long as some is consumed raw. There are veggies that can be eaten in ketosis. ALL veggies are carbs, but some are lower than others. In general greens are safe to eat. Grains, nuts, seeds, most fruit, and plant storage organs (potato, onions, etc) are higher in carbs and need to be eaten in, at the most, strict moderation, but they can be eaten.
