02-06-2010 10:52 AM Has anyone dealt with them before? I was thinking of getting a starter straight, and $28 for a "shave-ready" Gold Dollar sounds reasonable, or is it too good to be true? Justin Low
02-06-2010 01:28 PM Never heard of them Justin. My thoughts about Gold Dollars, however, is that you could probably do better getting a vintage razor on the SRP Classifieds that would be shave ready for not too much more cash. JMHO though and YMMV. Nathan http://www.adoramapix.com/batmang/gallery/shave-den-january-24-2010 Shave Den pics I intend to live forever, or die trying. ---Groucho Marx
02-06-2010 02:37 PM Hi Justin, Although I have not had a shave ready straight in my hands - thats fixin to change- ( thats some good Texan twang there Kev ). I do agree with Nathan. However, if you feel its worth a go, you never know, it could be a find & a half. I just checked out their site. A brush that looks like a boar brush is being sold as a silvertip for $16.00. Good luck mate.
02-06-2010 03:40 PM Gold Dollar razors are the same as the Double Arrow razors that were on eBay a lot a year or so ago. I have a DA that was modified and it was my first straight. It was modified by the previous owner because the scales were not well done and the warped blade (somewhat common in the cheap straights) was hitting the scales. The double arrow / gold dollar razors are probably some of the better cheapo straights and will hold an edge unlike most of the cheap eBay razors; however, as I indicated, the they were very hit and miss with quality control. Like Nathan said, look on the classifieds or get your hands on a good quality used Genco or similar blade and have it honed by one of the honemeisters. ~Justin~ ~My thoughts are as scattered as the frozen winds of November swept across the harvested fields of my mind.~
02-06-2010 04:48 PM My personal opinion - don't waste your money. Do as Nathan and Justin suggested and check out the SRP Classifieds. Another place to check is The Invisible Edge - they do shave ready vintage razors. http://www.theinvisibleedge.co.uk/shavereadyrazors.html The prices vary, and you'd have to see how they fit into your budget - one I glanced at was £43.50 Shipped Worldwide.
02-08-2010 03:25 AM Thanks for the feedback. I've taken the suggestions, and just purchased a vintage 6/8" Hollinger from a member on SRP. Not the greatest looker, but I hope it shaves well. Thanks again! Justin Low
02-23-2010 06:10 AM Justin, I may be late on this but for future reference, it's run by one of the members that was on SRP. I personally dealt with Jay and he's pleasant to deal with. Several members can vouch for this. There's a thread on vendor section "Mystery." There was talk of getting a bunch of Gold Dollars and nobody wanted to do anything. He chanced it and took it upon himself to help out those who wanted them. I've yet to try mine out. Ivan
| 03-18-2010 01:41 PM I e-mailed Jay several times and he is a legit guy, always came through. I wish him the best and would say you'd be alright dealing with him. | 10-04-2010 05:43 PM When I also wanted to start out with straight razors I went back n forth thinking about Gold Dollars razors..I found out they are in pretty bad shape from the factory in China..I was told by RupRazor that he updates them to be able to be shave ready plus removes some of the sharp end parts of the scales n whetever he says he will do to them..as a starter razor it isnt a bad idea IF you plan to keep it for a long time..if NOT...then get something worth a little more money so you won't feel like you are ready for something else bigger/smaller/stiffer blade Blades |
