| 11-06-2011 04:32 PM Welcome, Elm, and enjoy your stay. ![]() Where to begin, where to begin? Of course check the various forums here but if you are new to wet shaving you will need to start off with the basics, razor, blades, brush, and shaving cream or soap. If you haven't already, check out places like e-Bay for a vintage razor like a Gillette Tech or Superspeed. With a little cleaning, you may find a reasonably priced one that will serve you well as an introduction to wet shaving. A lot of us can tell you easy ways to clean and disinfect those razors. Some of my favorite razors are e-Bay specials. You can always branch out into newer models later on. Get a blade sampler pack from a place like Bullgoose Shaving Supplies, http://bullgooseshaving.net. There are other sites that sell these, as well. Depending on which sampler package you choose, this is an affordable way to find blades you might like. A blade that works for one person may not work for another and this is a simple way to find what works for you. There are different types of brushes in all price ranges including boar, badger, horsehair, and synthetic. Boar and badger are by far the most popular. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. You might want to start off with an inexpensive boar brush from Omega or Semogue. Look on various web sites to get an idea of what is out there. I like both shaving soaps and shaving creams. Shaving creams might be a bit easier to whip into a good lather but once you get used to making a lather you like then whether to use a cream or soap comes down to personal preference. This is just scratching the tip of what wet shaving is all about but I hope it gives you the urge to begin your journey. Again, to DFS. Freddy |
Welcome to the site, Elm! I do believe this is my local buddy, yes?! from one new guy to another, I'd first start out learning how to build a nice lather, either by bowl lathering, palm lathering, or building lather directly on your face. I think producing a good lather will dictate how comfortable or how bad your shave will generally be. Also, since you're local to me, I'll give you a few samples of some different creams to see what works best for you. Furthermore, if you get a chance, go check out Bed Bath & Beyond to pick up some Noxema deep cleaning cream with moisturizers to use as a pre-shave (apply it to your skin and leave it on, then apply your shaving cream right over it) and also pick up some shaving cream from The Real Shaving Co. | 11-06-2011 05:12 PM Thanks all for the welcomes. My dad used to shave with a safety razor and I've had a bunch of practice making lather for him (I hope it is like riding a bicycle). I've been musing a Mach 3 for a few years now but it seems after just a few shaves I start getting razor burn even going with the grain in certain spots. |
