It's not until recently that I actually paid attention to this websites offerings and noticed that the Semogue brushes are different than the typical ones offered.

There is the 1460 model listed, but the others I haven't seen. It does seem that they have plastic rings at the knot instead of the metal ring.

Anybody have experience with these or know anything about them? The main thing I want to know is if the tips will split on these.

Thanks

Cheers <-- My daughter thinks that emoticon is really funny so I had to add it.

Gary, I found the site really interesting. The Semogue brushes are priced very low and it is telling that the life of each brush is listed as 3-4 years of even daily use. I have always thought of a good shaving brush as having a lifespan longer than that. Also the description is identical for each brush. Nowhere on the site could I find the cost of shipping, though they claim to use USPS tracking services. Cheers (for your daughter)

Well, they are mostly models that Semogue produces for the mass market drugstores in Portugal.

The green one is a Semogue 208. Nice brush for the price, I have one of those, but mine is a vintage version with a metal ring and a softer, nicer knot. That particular one has a plastic ring, and the knot is similar to the 1520 models (stiffer one).

This one is a Semogue 1450 (and not 1460). I've seen that one once in a while in the Portuguese shops. Nice brush, but I don't really know the difference between the 1460 and 1450 models. A friend of mine has one of those and likes it very much.

This one (Semogue 82) and this one (Semogue 1140) feature very stiff knots, the darker bristles of this models are very stiff and scratchy, take a very long time to break-in, and will never be as soft as other semogue models. I personally don't like this particular type of boar hair; had a 1140 in the past, but ended up selling it.

This one I think it is a discontinued model, but I may be wrong. Don't know much about this one. I've seen that one on old drugstores here in Portugal (like this old drugstore in Lisbon), but never bought one, I never liked that handle too much...

Freddy, I'll have to double check but I did a dummy order the other day and the shipping was pretty reasonable. I'll go through it again and let you know.

Thanks Emanuel, great info as always!

Freddy, I'm looking at the checkout on Portuguesegift.com for three brushes, the 208, the white one, and the 82. Subtotal is 15.86 euro and shipping is 7.55 euro. Roughly $31 total.

Take out the 82 and the shipping goes down to 3.77 euro and a total of 14.02 euro. Roughly $19. So either way, including shipping, your looking at $10 a brush. Not bad if you have a few bucks to kick around.

Just a small advice: sometimes, old Semogue models like these ones have some problems with the painting. In the recent models, those problems are already solved, but in older models like these ones, the ink/varnish may have tendency to peel or break apart easily.

I strongly recommend you to apply a little coat of varnish on the handle. I have several vintage models in my collection, and I personally apply a layer of water-resistant varnish - followed by a drying period. That makes the handles very resistant, with the bonus of protecting the sticker from peeling off, also!

Probably wouldn't have bothered trying to protect the paint ahead of time even with my 1305 paint cracking.

Thanks guys for the reminder.

OK folks, a bit of a heads up. Do NOT order from the vendor mentioned above. 2 weeks after ordering the brushes, the order status was still 'waiting fulfillment'. I twice asked the vendor if the order had shipped and never received a response. I then put in a claim with paypal, while the paypal claim process was taking its time, the vendor then deleted all history of my order from their site and never responded to paypal to my claim.

So folks, stay away from portuguesegift.com
