12-11-2011 12:00 PM Having a short cropped military cut for the last 20 years or so, I've never had much need for any type of hair product. Now that I'm growing it out, I'm finding that I need something to do something with it. I got a hold of some of my wife's mousse, but that stuff makes my hair hard and crackly. I'm thinking of going old school, like some kind of tonic. Is that what tonics are for? Any other suggestions?
12-11-2011 12:15 PM myself i have two hair products i really like as i have long hair on top and short at the sides.so my to go for is Brylcreem, pashana briliantine, and pashana blue orchid hair oil.all great keeps the hair in good condition and setled but you can still run your hands through your hair.Good Luck.
12-11-2011 02:16 PM As Selwyn stated, I've used Brylcreem for many years. Before that, Wildroot, which I believe is available once again. Better a diamond with a flaw than a polished pebble.... Bill Brown
12-11-2011 02:23 PM I've never heard of Wildroot, but I was just in Walgreens and browsing their section for men and saw the Wildroot there. I remember thinking, "Never heard of that one..." They did have the Brylcreem, and also the Clubman Gel. I'm not sure about a gel, the stuff I have used also makes my hair stiff like the mousse, it dries hard. I picked up some Vitalis, mainly because I remember it on the shelf in the barber's when I was a kid. Opened it up and it smells OK enough, too. Maybe next time out I'll pick up the Brylcreem.
12-11-2011 03:06 PM Matt, I find I have to use gel or my hair can't be controlled. However, as soon as it gets hard, I comb out the gel and my hair still keeps its shape but with absolutely no stiff feeling. If you are going for a liquid hair tonic then the Pinaud Eau de Portugal has a wonderful scent. Whether or not it will control your hair the way you like is something you will just have to see. As for not hearing about Wildroot, of course not, you're just a youngster so why would you? ![]() Good luck in your search. Freddy
12-11-2011 03:14 PM I like the Pinaus EdP as well. I add a little glycerine at times if I want a little hold. I mainly use tonics w/o oil just to wet down my hair enough to make combing a bit easier, and for the wonderful scents.
12-11-2011 04:37 PM Great, thanks for the suggestions. What does the Eau de Portugal smell like? Anything that it smells similar to?
12-11-2011 04:56 PM I'm on my way to a chrome dome so I just have my hair cut short. If I just have a shower and thats it, my hair looks dried and frizzy. If I use tonic, it gives it a little bit of a shine which makes it look healthier. I have access to all the Pinaud products locally. Eau de Portugal is nice and does the job. Right now I use the green non oil Jeris and works maybe a smidge less effective as the Eau de Portugal. Meaning I need more product to keep my hair shiny. I haven't tried the oil versions but its like looking at a bottle of salad dressing as it has a big blob thick oil within the bottle. Gary

12-12-2011 03:45 PM So I used the Vitalis today. I have to say, it turned out I like it better than I expected. It holds just how I put it (combed back with hands), didn't make my hair hard or crackly, and doesn't make it look greasy. Just enough of the "wet look" that I like. The only drawback is that the scent lingers and lingers. I'm still smelling it now, 6 hours after applying it, and I used it sparingly, for sure. It's not a bad scent, what I call an old-school Italian barbershop scent, but I don't want to be smelling it all day, either. We'll see what the wife and kids think when they get home.
