there's a plugin for mybb (forum software we use) to install a photo gallery on the forum. if people think it'll be useful for the users on this site, I'll add it.

might not be bad to use for shave of the day photos and other equipment photos and etc.

my buddy runs the gallery plugin on his forums if you want to check out a demo:

Andrew, could this be used in place of something like Photobucket? Could one post the SOTD pics in here and have the pic show in SOTD forum?

Andrew, sorry for the lack of tech savvy here Ashamed0001 but how does it work? Would I be able to just get a picture from iPhoto? Right now, I snap a photo, load it into iPhoto where I crop it, upload it to Picnik and/or Photobucket where I add text and resize it, and then copy it into DFS for SOTD, The Haul, etc. How would this plug-in work?

yes, it would replace photobucket. you could make the images viewable in the SOTD section just like you do now with whatever hosting service you use.

similar to photobucket or any other gallery software.

find your photo, upload it, give it a description, tags, and boom.

Well, I'm almost as tech savvy as freddy, so bear with me...

Maybe some others can chime in with questions; but is it as versatile as the others mentioned (or close)? Can I still delete it from the library on my computer and have it stored here? I obviously can't share these pics on other boards, but I don't really, personally care.

Sounds like a 'no brainer to me'. Idea

yes, it's versatile, though the free version only allows you to upload 1 photo at a time and there's no personal albums; just general albums an admin or super moderator creates. you can upload the photos and then delete them from your pc as it stores the photos on the server this site is hosted on.

and yes, you can share the link on other forums and still have them visible.

What are the advantages of using the plug in as opposed to using photobucket etc ?

Best,
Andy.

If DFS ceases to exist, you lose all your pictures.

all the photos would be shown on DFS rather than photobucket where only you have access to it probably.

Will the photo gallery eat up forum bandwidth to cause problems for the forum later down the road?

I for one am a fan of photobucket because you can create albums for your photo's to keep track of different subject matters. You can also make them private or public as well. So even if your album is private (so no one can lift and your photos) you can still use the links to display them.

One other thought while on the subject is the topic of linking photo's. http://www.boogiejack.com/copyband.html It is bandwidth theft to hotlink photos which means finding photo's on another site and using that link to display that image on another site. It is a crime to do that, but many don't realize that. Depending on the issue it could be a felony in the eyes of the law. I've been subject to that theft and it uses up a lot of bandwidth, bandwidth I was paying for. It took a bit to track it down and it was a pain to get the person doing it to stop. (I believe my website host threatened to send lawyers after the lady doing it if she didn't stop it. She was using my photo's on ebay) I know it's done often on these types of forums, but it's really wrong and shouldn't be done. So if your going to use someone elses image that is hosted on another site, you really should copy that photo to your hard drive (computer) and then upload that photo to another photo host like photobucket and then use that link to display your image.
Okay I'll get off my soapbox now.

no. the only thing it would take up is space, and my hosting package is "unlimited"...which really means that they oversell their server space and expect people to under use it.

yeah, that's one of the drawbacks to the mybb photo gallery plugin as of right now is the inability to create user albums on your own. I might see if someone can put together a plugin to accomplish that. but as always, I'd still keep an account with photobucket or what have you to have a backup of all of your photos and to keep stuff private if you don't want it to be seen. personally, I run my own photo gallery here: gallery.andrewshemo.com

see, I see it as a promotion for a product, personally. if someone is linking to your photos from your site (granted I don't know what photos of yours she was linking to), then she could very well be promoting your product.

Honestly Andrew if your paying for the website, having someone steal bandwidth by using photo links is a huge PITA because of how it works.

Say someone uses my photo on their blog, then when their blog page opens it's counting against the bandwidth I pay for even without going to my website. So it doesn't always promote something.

Say someone searches out art of shaving shave soap and uses their image. That photo could be taken from any number of websites and someone is paying for it and it might not always be the company who's item being sold. Does that make sense.

Many business get a little snippy about people stealing their bandwidth. When it's just as easy for someone to upload a photo to photobucket and take a little extra time to do it correctly.

might want to find a hosting company that provides "unlimited bandwidth". you can find them for under $7/month...check out host monster.

Andrew, I get the impression there's no real enthuiasm for it.
Personally I not sure just how useful it would be however, I don't think it would hurt to give it a go and see.
Your call.

Best,
Andy.
