I am considering a Rooney 3, Medium. I face lather with soap 4-5 days per week, and bowl lather with creams on the weekend. I prefer a little longer loft even though I face lather. I presently have 3 pure brushes, 1 best (Simpson Colonel 2XL), 1 Omega Boar, 2 Frank Shaving Finest, and 3 Silver tips including a super silver tip. I am considering a Rooney 3, Medium, but don't know if I want it in "Best" or silver tip. Please make suggestions!!!!!

I'm going to say in finest, and only because I found my silvertip too floppy for me. It was a TGN silvertip in a Penchetta Penworks handle. I have a Semogue Owners Club in finest, and love it. In fact, it's slowly pulling me away from boars and back to badgers! Eek7

I don't think Semogue and Rooney Finests are really comparable. It may not be a problem, but if one is buying a Rooney 3/2 Finest, he should be ready to spend $200-250 or more - if one can even be found. They very rarely come up for sale. A Rooney 3/2 in Super, on the other hand, can be found more readily and bought on the forums for $80-100 or new for about $110-115. In Best one costs just over $80 shipped.

I've just taken delivery of a Rooney 3/1 (small) in silvertip, and though I've only used it twice, my first impressions are very favourable indeed.

I specifically wanted a brush with soft tips that's good for face lathering, and that's exactly what I got - the tips are just about as soft as my Frank Shaving silvertip, but it's better packed and the much shorter loft gives it more backbone, and it's far more manageable on my face.

And it's also no slouch with hard soaps - my first shave using it was with Tabac, and it gave me the best Tabac lather I've ever had. The second was with Old Spice cream, and it was at least as good as any cream lather I've had.

But if you're going for the 3/2 (medium) knot, maybe a best might be the one to go for, it's hard to say - I haven't tried a Rooney best, but I like the silvertip so much that there's a pretty good chance I'll end up with one of those too.

On the subject of the Semogue SOC, I have the 2-band badger version of that, and it's a very different beast - I really don't think Semogue comparison is relevant to your decision.

I had a 3/1 super and sold it only for funds. It's a great brush, quite dense and holds onto the lather. I face lather and I'd say after a full year of use, the tips were probably the softest of any brush I've had but the backbone was super strong.

When you guys are talking about a Rooney 3/1, are you talking about one of these?

No sir, I have a 1/1 and 1/2 with D.R. Harris name on them. Rooney made them. Mine are both best badger and two of my favorite brushes. D.R. Harris calls them H1 and H2. They look like this.

Are you happy with the best hair and do you find it both capable with face lathering and creams?

Have you thought about a Morris & Forndran? A Lee Sabini brush like the Rooney but the latest rage with the cool kids from what I hear.
