After the announcements that P160 and Iridium blades were to disappear I went a little crazy. I also got the Vintage bug thanks to dodgy and the 46 Gold Aristocrat he sent me. It was to be a loaner but after asking for his address he said to PIF the old girl when I was ready. After the goodies I received in the mail today I have given the old Aristocrat to my Step Father for a spin and I will be doing a PIF for that razor just after Thanksgiving. I want to get him a Muhle R89 for X-mas or his B-Day comming up, unless he likes the old Gillette and in that case I will have to track down another Vintage Razor. Thank you dodgy for the interest in my hobby and for the enabling device you sent me, you are extremely generous. Today I received a replacement for the PIF unit in the mail along with some other goodies.

1.) 1000g Block of P160
2.) Nice big tub of Cella to sample, this Cella BTW smells more like the P160 and makes me think the stuff we get here in the red tubs is old or different.
3.) Giant Italian Alum Rock of some sort
4.) Proraso Gel, I believe it is some kind of wound treatment but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
5.) British Aristocrat with the original Rhodium plate in near perfect condition, it appears the center bar and risers are one piece or blended so well that you cant tell they were stamped and bent. They said it was from the 50's. Maybe someone can look at the numbers and tell me more about it. Probably dodgy as he seems to have a Gillette Encyclopedia in his brain. It is (No. 430030)
6.) I also picked up 400 Iridium blades when the bad news hit, I am sure its in my head but I have not found a comparable blade.

Thanks everyone, appreciate that. I don't normally post the things I buy but this was too cool so I had to do it.

I tried out the new razor for the first time tonight using P160 and it shaves extremely nice. I think I like it better than the Muhle. The Muhle is a very nice shaving tool but has two drawbacks for me. The gap between the blade and the safety bar make for a situation where off angle shaving can have bad consequences as the gap can take a big bite if your not careful. The Aristocrat (or is it a SuperSpeed made in the 50's and called an Aristocrat) seems easier to angle properly due to the fact the blade rests directly on the safety bar and is only capable of taking a tiny bite. I have also come to realize that a nice heavy razor may look macho and feel macho in the hand but it is the lighter razors that are easy to control and easy to get the pressure correct.

The quality of the British Gillette compared to the 1946 American version dodgy sent me is very high. Fit & Finish are much nicer. Knurling on the handle is the best I have seen and the mechanism is very solid, tight, and smooth. The American model had a very sloppy and loose TTO as compared to this one, but it also saw much more use.

The P160 is very nice shaving and smelling. I cannot believe this is discontinued and Cella still sells. All this and the Semogue SOC and I honestly can't think of another shave item I want except for some gifts for other people. I am super lucky to have these things and I can't wait until Thanksgiving so I can do my first PIF. Smile

Nice haul...I've heard the British rockets are better than the US Superspeeds...I've never had the opportunity to use one, tho...I imagine the British Aristocrats are equally well made (I haven't tried either of those also, however).

I have been looking and this appears to be a #49. It is just like a Rocket but it has a flat base plate under the silo doors where the blade sits. The TTO seems awfully hard to turn and to me this is either a good thing or a bad one. It's very smooth but has a lot of resistance. Maybe because of the receding knob and larger threads in the handle??? It shaves nice. :hmm:

Hey Phil, never let it be said I wasn't doing my part to stimulate an economy. Busted
