I'd like to add a badger brush to my stable for around $30. what do you guys recommend that's decent in that price range (or at least very close to it)?

AOS has a badger brush that is very good and as you move up it becomes your travel or spare later on. It comes in their complet kit as well.

At first I was going to say don't bother, wait a while until you can add another $30. Then I thought you could get a knot and handle from the Golden Nib, then I thought of the Vulfix 404 badger/boar mix. I don't have one but people rave about them.

if I set my limit to $60, what would you then recommend? I don't need the brush at this dire moment, so I can wait a little bit.

A Frank Shaving finest badger is great. I have 2 of them and their cost was in your $30.00 range.

Andrew, I have more than a couple of Tony's brushes. This might be a good place to look for a new 2 band at a reasonable price. FS on Ebay is cheaper, but no Finest at this time.

Sorry, $30 isn't quite there.

Forgot about the Frank shaving. Probably a good idea as badgers can get pricey.

I'd say use that Semogue 2015HD while you've got it. That will help to narrow down whether you like badger vs boar, or both. Who knows, maybe you can get it for $30 or less... Devil Rotflol

There are several different grades of badger hair, with silvertip being the top of the line for softness, IIRC. Some more experienced badger users can chime in here. I have an SOC 2-band Finest, but it's no where near $30, or even $60. The 2015HD is silvertip.

My first brush was a silvertip from Penchetta Penworks. It did well enough, but then I tried face lathering and it just wasn't cutting it - too soft and floppy. Not as much of an issue if you bowl lather. I found a vintage NIB Ever Ready boar which is what really broke the ground for me with facelathering and introducing me to boar. Shortly thereafter I picked up a Semogue 1305, and not too long after that I sold off my Penchetta silvertip. To each their own, I know a ton of people love their badgers...

Andrew, you should consider looking at the New Forest line of brushes. They cost a tad more than your current range but they punch way above their weight. They have been designed by Fido ( member on here ) & he has tried out ALOT of brushes, his blog makes an interesting read.

I was the original owner of the 2015HD you currently have. It is a great bowl lathering brush. l face lather everything....so it did not work out too well for me. The New Forest 22mm 2 Band & silvertip are very good bowl & face latherers.

TGN have some great knots as mentioned. You could re knot a vintage handle or contact Rudy Vey ( member on here ) & he would knock you one up to your spec.

looking on ebay at some frank shaving badger brushes. let me know what you guys think. I was looking at this one:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Finest-Badger-ha...3f0bbd08ae

or this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Silvertip-Badger...3f08402f3a

now, from what I've seen, silvertip seems to be the best badger hair brush to buy, with I assume finest being in the middle?

the 2nd brush in $38. would you spend $38 plus $7 shipping on a FS brush of would you go to a different brand?

Hi andrew frank brushes have become great value for money not all will say that as wee all like difrent brushes and styles.if i hade to pick i would go for the second one the silver tip it has a bit more weight in the body and frank silver tip,s ar nice brushes.it,s so hard to pick a brush also you have a budget to keep to.so it limit,s you,r choise i have frank brushes and have not bean disapointed.some guy,s like the top name on thair brushes but i tell you now as long as the brush does what you want and gives you a good performance and that is making larther out of you,r soap or cream and feals good what more do you want.out of all my shaving brushes i have never payed more than £45 pound,s for and never would.all my brushes make great larther from all my creams and soaps. good luckCheers

Andrew, I think Selwyn pretty much covered it. Selwyn gifted me with a Frank Shaving finest brush and I liked it so much that I bought a second. Both are finest and both are fantastic performers. I have two silver-tip badger brushes that are not Frank Shaving and while I enjoy them and would never give them up, they are not nearly as versatile as the Frank Shaving finest. I highly recommend them as quality made brushes at an affordable price.

This doesn't mean that I haven't been tempted by the Frank silver-tip. If they are made with the same quality as the finest then they are incredible value for money and I shall probably order one someday. Smile
