12-11-2011 03:21 PM I'm thinking about making some melt and pour shave soap for myself, and I see Brambleberry has a melt and pour shave soap base. http://www.brambleberry.com/Shaving-Melt...P4384.aspx Ingredients: Coconut Oil, Palm Oil, Safflower Oil, Glycerin (kosher, of vegetable origin), Purified Water, Sodium Hydroxide (saponifying agent), Sorbitol (moisturizer), Sorbitan oleate (emulsifier), Soy bean protein (conditioner), Wheat Protein (conditioner) Have any of you guys done anything like this ? If so, how many normal size pucks do you get from a pound of soap base ?

12-12-2011 03:32 AM good luck, if you decide to make it! if you do make some, and make extras, I'd be in for giving it a try!
12-14-2011 09:32 AM Well, I bit the bullet and made the order last night. 1 lb of their Shave Soap Base 1 lb of their Shea Butter Base 2 oz of Bentonite Clay 2 oz of Arabian Spice FO 2 oz of Ginger Lime FO Arabian Spice: Filled with the aromatic scents of a romantic time past, Arabian Spice is a blend of Myrrh and Orange, with middle notes of Ginger, Cinnamon and Cloves. It is then rounded out with Caraway Seed and Vanilla to give it a warm, tranquil feeling. Ginger Lime: Ginger and Lime is comprised of the obvious title notes, as well as some extras to make the mix just a little bit more complex and exciting. Rounding out the marriage of Ginger and Lime are supporting notes of Lemon, Lilly, Grapefruit and a minuscule amount of spice. I'm not sure how much 2 lbs of soap base will make, and I'm looking for something to use as soap molds ( Pringles Cans seem to be a popular choice with some home soap makers but I may look for something a little larger ).
12-14-2011 12:35 PM That is the base that Mama Bear uses just to give you an idea of it's quality and reviews. Good stuff, I have about 15 pounds of it sitting since this spring that i haven't used yet. If you think of a pound as 16 oz and a puck is on average 4 ounces, you will get about 4 pucks from it. Two pounds and you will get 8 pucks. Instead of using pringles cans for the soap, how about buying those glad 8 oz containers and pouring the soap directly into it. Brambleberry is spendy on their scents. If you want more scents that aren't as spendy with reasonable shipping try this company. You do add your own shipping to your cart, so you can base your order on the shipping. They do tell you how much you can fit into what size shipping option. They do have some scents that are not skin safe but they are clearly marked. Their 1 oz bottles are really reasonable which would be perfect for you so you can have several scents without breaking the bank. http://www.thecandlesource.com/id1.html If you want something a little larger than the pringles can you can try these individual molds. I do own several of these molds myself. The shipping cost is included in the price. http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/Pro...+Mold+1602 http://www.prairie-creations.com/shop/index.php click to find Prairie Creations ~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~ "believe you can and you're halfway there" Theodore Roosevelt
12-14-2011 01:18 PM Krissy I appreciate your suggestions, and with your experience I know they are good ones. I doubt I'll get to involved in this side of the hobby, but I just wanted to play around with it as I am a bit of a tinkerer at heart. I'll bookmark those sites ... especially the scents as I've been known to make candles as well from time to time.
12-14-2011 02:31 PM Even if it's for your own use, I would highly suggest using those glad/ziplock plastic containers that are reusable yet disposable that many use for shave soaps rather than use the pringles can to make pucks. You can pour the soap directly into the container and let it set. Label and stack and use. That way you can have many scents and just make a small amount at a time and make what you need. The soap base will keep if wrapped in plastic. Those containers can be microwaved as well so you could melt the soap in the container, stir in the FO really good and let it sit and harden back up to make less clean up for you as well. Since your just making it for yourself, and I can't imagine why you want six pucks of the same soap scent. Especially with melt and pour soap base. Just wrap the soap in plastic wrap so it's sealed so you can set it aside until you want to use it again later. That way when your done with one jar, you can just make up a little more. Since the soap lasts a long time, you ensure a fresh soap with a strong scent just in case the scent fades as the soap ages. Ordering scents from the candle source is to your benefit because you don't need much scent. Their 1 oz bottles are affordable, you can have many different scents without breaking the bank. But they are limited on their scents, and they don't have many masculine type scents that the other companies have. A scale (digital) is most helpful so you can weigh out your soap base. Then add your fragrance based on how much soap base your using. To melt the soap, chunk it up in small pieces and put it in the microwave for 10 second bursts until it's melted. Better yet, until it's mostly melted. Stir and use it's own heat the melt the last little bit. It won't take long. If you add your fragrance and it's too hot, your going to burn off the scent and it won't come through like you want. Also the soap base can alter the scent from what you smell out of the bottle. That is typical of any scent from any company. http://www.prairie-creations.com/shop/index.php click to find Prairie Creations ~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~"~:~ "believe you can and you're halfway there" Theodore Roosevelt

12-14-2011 03:43 PM Another good source for some Fragrances is http://www.naturesgardencandles.com/. They also have 1 ounce sample bottles, great pricing, amazing service and quick shipping. Their customer service really is second to none plus they have a wonderful soapmaker involved in their business now as a consultant so you will get expert advice from them if you need it. Have fun with this... but be warned it could get addictive.... The Store We help you care for your skin as much as it cares for you - Naturally
12-14-2011 04:14 PM I'm getting a nice little collection of weblinks in my Favorites. Thanks for the info, Lindy.
12-19-2011 03:30 PM Anybody got any input to adding anything extra to the M&P base to improve it's shave characteristics? I was debating adding some castor oil ( teaspoon per pound of base ), and perhaps some Vitamin E oil in about the same amount.
